processes and procedures associated with special education

Introduction

Special education is the process of providing educational services to a child who has special needs. The goal of this process is to help your child meet their academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. It also allows for an individualized education plan (IEP) or an assessment, evaluation, accommodation plan (AEAP) which are written plans created by professionals that outline how they will meet those needs.

Documentation

Documentation is an important part of your special education program. Documentation includes:

  • Record of services provided to the child, including a description of what was done and when it was done.
  • Documentation of parent involvement in the provision of in-home services and/or transition planning. This can include written agreements between parents or guardians and providers regarding provision of some or all aspects/areas covered under section 504/ADA regulations (e.g., transportation).
  • Evidence that you have conducted an assessment for each student who needs one based on state statutes (see section 504), federal regulations (see Title 34), individualized education programs (IEPs) developed by team meetings that include parents, teachers, administrators and other qualified staff members; if no IEP exists then this should be documented as well as why there isn’t one yet but would like one soon enough so we can start working together on making sure everyone understands each other’s roles within this process

Individualized Education Program (IEP)

An IEP is a written document that describes how your child with special needs should be educated, and what services he or she will receive. It is developed by a team of professionals who meet with you and other members of your family to discuss the goals for your child’s education.

The IEP team includes teachers, school specialists, nurses, psychologists/psychiatrists (if needed), speech pathologists (if needed), occupational therapists (if needed), physical therapists (if needed) and social workers. The team meets frequently throughout the year to review progress toward achievement of those goals in order to make changes if necessary.

Each individualized education plan has four components:

  • Special Education Plan–This part outlines how each student’s academic needs can best be met at school through specialized instruction within regular classrooms; it also discusses how these services may best be coordinated with other supports available outside of school settings such as homebound instruction if necessary.* Individualized Instruction Plan–This section details specific types of interventions needed by students receiving special education services so they receive appropriate educational opportunities while meeting their individualized needs related directly back into areas where underlying factors may create barriers preventing full participation in mainstream classrooms.* Transition Planning Plan–This section includes information about how transition plans should address issues related both inside schools where transition occurs between elementary grades one through three , middle schools , high schools , postsecondary institutions etc . As well as outside sources such as community resources available locally nearby townships communities counties cities suburbs states regions countrywide world wide !

Assessment, Evaluation, and Accommodation Plan (AEAP)

The AEAP (Assessment, Evaluation and Accommodation Plan) is the plan that outlines the services, accommodations and modifications that a student needs to be successful in the general education classroom. The special education team develops this document with input from you as parents/guardians and your child’s teacher. The AEAP must be updated at least annually.

Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA)

A functional behavioral assessment is an evaluation that seeks to determine the underlying causes of behaviors. In order for a student to receive services, his or her behavior must be addressed. The FBA can help identify which areas need improvement and allows your team to develop an individualized plan of action that targets those specific needs. This process involves collecting information about the child’s life and environment, observing him/her in everyday situations, asking questions about how he/she feels about things (e.g., “How does this make you feel?”), observing how much time students spend on each task throughout their day (e.g., watching TV versus doing homework), reviewing books with them if necessary so they understand what’s expected from them when doing different tasks at home/school etc…

Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

  • Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

A BIP is a plan that is developed to address the behavioral needs of a student with special needs. It is developed by the school and parent or guardian of the student, but it must be approved by a qualified specialist in your state’s Department of Education. The plans are based on what you feel would be most effective for your child, as well as on his/her age and development level.

The goal of an IEP team is to ensure that all children have access to appropriate services so they can learn effectively in school environments where they can succeed academically, socially and emotionally; enjoy their activities; maintain healthy relationships with peers and adults; live independently within their communities; develop positive attitudes towards learning new skills; make good choices about health behaviors such as eating properly or practicing safe sex practices (including HIV/AIDS testing).

If you have special needs, please consult a professional.

If you have special needs, please consult a professional. There are many ways to do this:

  • Consult with your family doctor or therapist about how to manage your condition.
  • Make sure that you are not doing anything that will make it worse and/or cause injury to yourself or others.
  • Ask for help from other professionals if needed (such as doctors, nurses and occupational therapists). Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on any questions they may have by saying something like: “I’m not sure what happened here.” You can also say “I’m confused.” And don’t forget the most important thing: keep on asking until someone explains things clearly enough so that they make sense!

Conclusion

I hope that this post has helped you understand the process of special education. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s individualized education program or behavior intervention plan, please contact your local school district office for more information on how to move forward with those processes.
