The family health nurse has been described as a “community health worker” and is responsible for delivering comprehensive home- and community-based care to patients with diverse needs. The role of the family health nurse can be found in various community settings including schools, rural communities, pediatric clinics and other types of community-based settings.

Community health settings

Community health settings are community-based organizations that provide direct health services to a population, such as schools, hospitals and public health departments. These settings also provide educational programs for people who want to learn more about their own health or the health of others in their communities.

Rural health center

Family health nurses work in rural health centers, which are community-based clinics or hospitals that provide direct care to families. Family health nurses are registered nurses who provide direct patient care and coordinate all aspects of a family’s medical needs with other healthcare professionals, including physicians and other practitioners.

Rural health centers offer a variety of services to people who live in rural areas:

• Primary care–providing comprehensive primary care services such as physical exams and immunizations; basic lab tests; treatment for common diseases (such as colds) without referral from another provider; mental health services such as counseling for depression or anxiety disorders; reproductive health services such as birth control pills or abortions when necessary (for example if pregnancy threatens the financial security of either partner); preventive screenings for high blood pressure or diabetes type 2 diabetes mellitus.)
