Utilitarians think in terms of “the greatest good for the greatest number”–what would be best for everyone involved in making decisions about actions and policies? They also tend to be more concerned with what makes sense from an individual perspective than from another person’s point of view (for example: if we care about helping others but also want them to have access to clean water; this might mean providing access through pipes rather than wells).
Virtue theory is a theory that focuses on character traits that lead an individual to act in an ethical manner. Virtue theorists believe that people have the ability to identify and develop their own virtuous character traits through self-reflection, education, and experience (Beal). Virtue theorists also believe that virtue is a social construct based on expectations of how humans should behave in society.
