“Imagine a scenario in which wind energy is used to produce of electricity using a turbine, and that electricity is transmitted through a typical electrical grid to an Energy Vault storage facility. One month later, the energy vault produces electricity which travels through power lines to you to charge your Babson laptop computer battery that you then use to power the lights in your computer’s screen the next day.
(a) List as many transformations of energy that occur in this system as you are able. Be sure to indicate what forms of the energy takes (kinetic, potential, chemical etc.) at each stage. For, example if the scenario described involved burning wood (which it does not), you could say “chemical energy in the wood is converted into thermal energy and light/electromagnetic radiation when to wood is combusted”).
(b) Indicate where in the system energy is lost and what form the lost energy takes
(c) Where in this system to you expect to see alternating current being used and where do you expect to see direct current being used?
(d) Where do you expect to see the highest voltage in this system and where do you expect to see the lowest voltage?”
Please take the time allotted to organize your thoughts and your responses in a clear coherent way, this answer must be given back in ONE HOUR. Although writing style itself is not graded, answers that are hard to follow or unclear will not receive full credit. You are welcome and encouraged to label your responses to the parts of each question (a, b, c, etc) rather than write a single essay that encompasses all related questions.
Be sure to use key concepts, key terms and examples from class material when appropriate.
Attached below is a document with the courses key concepts, key terms and examples. Please use THOSE that are fitting and will answer the question correctly.
Each question is designed such that it can be answered based solely on course material and your own analytical skills without looking up outside information. Although you are free to look up information, answers that do not reflect an understanding of course concepts and rely heavily on material not covered in the course will not be given full credit.
There is no word length requirement or limit. You should be sure to answer all parts of each question (being sure to explain your reasoning based on course material when asked to do so and making sure to use key terms when appropriate). I would much prefer that you use clear concise and precise language and fewer words than a long response that veers off topic or is redundant/excessively wordy.
Depending on the question, a response to a sub question (a, b, c etc) could be a single well constructed sentence if the question is direct or a paragraph or two, if the question asks you to explain.
