Being able to apply ethical decision-making theories and personal philosophies to real business dilemmas is an important component of student learning in this course. Students will identify and solve a real-life problem faced by an organization. You will select an ethical dilemma topic that a real business is either currently facing, or has faced in the past. Each student has the autonomy to choose their own topic and company for this project; however, your instructor has final approval of your topic.

You will take on the role of an Ethics Task Team, and review the ethics management system that is currently in place, based on information you are able to find through your research.

Alternatives (~ 3 pages)
Based on your review of the current ethics management system, your independent research, and your knowledge of class theories and concepts, your Ethics Task Team will develop three alternative courses of action. Be sure to determine and discuss the likely consequences of each proposed action for both the identified stakeholders and the culture of ethics at the organization.
Recommendation (~ 1.5 pages)
Choose one of the three identified alternatives to be your Ethical Task Team’s recommendation. Be sure to justify why this alternative is a superior choice to the other two identified alternatives. Base your decision on evidence from your ethical analysis, your independent research, and your knowledge of course concepts/theories.

Your Ethics Task Team should conduct an Ethics Opportunity-Risk Assessment, through thoroughly researching the ethical dilemma you identified for your organization. You should concentrate on the decision makers and the underlying factors at play in the organization that led to the ethical dilemma. This assessment should give you a clear understanding of the leader behaviors and organizational practices that allowed the ethical dilemma to emerge.
In addition, this analysis should help you identify factors that could put the organization at risk in the future. At the same time, an ethics risk assessment should help your Ethics Task Team identify the opportunities related to ethics that can be used by the organization.
Analysis of Current Code of Conduct
Your Ethics Task Team should review the organization’s current code of conduct and/or the ethics policy/statement to see if the ethics risks you have identified are currently accounted for in those documents. If not, you should consider recommending revisions or new / additional policies.
Ethical codes and policies should reflect an ethical framework or belief system that has been adopted by the organization (for example, the underlying framework for a compliance-oriented ethics policy may be based on deontological ethical theories. Consequently, the code of conduct should include clear guidelines for employees to follow. On the other hand, a virtue-ethics based policy may have a more aspirational tone). Your Ethics Task Team should specifically identify the ethical framework underlying the organization’s current code of conduct / ethics policy, and identify any additional ethical frameworks that might underlie your suggestions for revisions and additions to the current policies.
Analysis of Institutionalization of Ethics across the Organization:
The institutionalization of ethics represents how thoroughly ethics is manifest in organizational practices and daily routines, and it should help to form an ethical culture in the organization. (e.g. are the organization’s espoused values and enacted values aligned?) If not, can you identify where the breakdown in values has occurred?
