Texas residents are represented by various officials elected at the local, state and Federal levels and may ask any of their elected representatives to consider desired changes in public policy.
Students will research and write a paper identifying and briefly describing the elected officials who represent them, including, without limitation, persons serving in the Texas Legislature and the United States Congress. This paper should include, for each representative, the office held, the district or other political unit represented, brief background information (such as education, professional and political experience, and significant accomplishments) and contact information (including, without limitation, telephone numbers and Email and mailing addresses). Each student should identify and write about the elected officials who represent THAT STUDENT and should NOT write about holders of public office more generally.
Students also will research and write, and will include as an attachment to their paper, a letter to one or more of their elected representatives identifying an issue important to them and expressing their views on that issue, including, without limitation, arguments in support and rebuttal of arguments against same. This letter should be directed to officials at the appropriate level of government (for instance, an issue regarding state property taxes should be addressed at the state level, whereas an issue regarding local property taxes, street maintenance or trash pick-up should be addressed at a local level). The letter should include the Email and mailing address of the elected official to whom same is directed as well as the name, contact information and signature of the student writing the letter, and should otherwise be a finished product suitable for transmission. The letter does NOT actually have to be transmitted to an elected official.
The goal of this assignment is for students to demonstrate that they are knowledgeable about the elected officials who represent them and are able to communicate with those officials concerning important issues.
Parameters
The body of this paper must be written in essay style (not outline style), double-spaced, using one-inch margins and Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font. The paper must include a cover page with student name, course and section and should not include a table of contents, photographs, drawings, artwork, graphs, tables or other embellishments.
The letter attached to this paper should be in business format, single-spaced, using one-inch margins, Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font. The letter should be written as a business letter – short, sweet and directly to the point is best. The letter should not include photographs, drawings, artwork, graphs, tables or other embellishments unless necessary to make the desired point. Items may be enclosed as exhibits to the letter but should be kept to the minimum.
The paper and attached letter should be approximately 8 full pages in length overall. The letter will count toward overall length requirements, but no other items attached or enclosed as exhibits to either the paper or the letter will count for that purpose.
The paper and attached letter should contain no or minimal grammatical, spelling or sentence construction errors, typos, formatting glitches, etc. For the body of the paper, first person should not be used except where the student’s own arguments or views are expressed – student views are welcome but should be confined to a final paragraph or two. For the attached letter, use of first person is appropriate as the point is to express student arguments and views. Students should make use of spellcheck and grammarcheck features of their word processing software for both the body of the paper and the attached letter.
Key points made in the body of the paper must be supported with source citations in MLA form (footnotes or in-text parenthetical citations are acceptable). All sources cited must also be cited in MLA form on a References or Works Cited page in order of appearance in the body of the paper. Do NOT copy text from sources without proper attribution and AVOID lengthy quotations from cited sources (paraphrase instead with appropriate attribution).
The paper with attached letter should be submitted as one integrated paper or electronic file rather than in multiple separate sections or files. However, if necessary due to conflicting formatting parameters, the letter may be submitted as a separate file the name of which makes clear reference to this assignment and the associated student paper.

For the body of this paper, students must use recognized and reliable sources such as government websites and other government publications. Students must provide a formal Modern Language Arts (MLA) citation for each source, both in-text or via footnote and on the References or Works Cited page.
