PROJECT CASE: Implementing a Flexible Screen Smart Phone Background Byte Manufacturing Services (BMS) was established in Singapore in 2005 by the founder and CEO, Mr. Goh Lip Peng. It started as a contract manufacturer providing product manufacturing and assembly services to international product designers under the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) business model. Throughout the years, BMS has improved its development capabilities to produce its own products and sell them to its international clients for rebranding under the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) business model. BMS aspires to be another Creative Technology, selling products under its own brand name.
BMS management wants to develop a smartphone with flexible screen. BMS calls the project Byte Phone (BPhone) Project. To be ready for advanced applications, BPhone will be equipped with the 5th Generation (5G) mobile technology.
BMS will have to work with Silky Vision Pty (SVP), a startup company in UK who has developed a flexible screen based on its patented Graphene technology. BMS will also work with NijiaTech (NJT), a Japanese company that has developed a 5G processor. This will be the first time SVP and NJT put their products into a commercial phone. The CEO has gathered a Project Team which consists of the following members:
1. Yourself: A Senior Product Manager from BMS. You will lead the project, coordinate the activities and liaise with all external partners and agencies on commercial matters.
2. Mr. Wahid: A Software Engineer from BMS. His role is to develop the electronic circuit and the BPhone Operating System (BOS) based on the Android Platform.
3. Ms Shanti: A Hardware Engineer from BMS. Her role is to design BPhone’s mechanical structure and assembly process.
4. Ms. Himari: A System Engineer from NJT. She will work with Wahid on developing the BOS software to control NJT’s 5G processor.
5. Mr. Johnson: A Product Specialist from SVP. He will work with Shanti on a customising a flexible screen for BPhone.
Ms Shanti has been working in BMS for five years. Mr Wahid, an experienced phone designer, was recruited recently to strengthen BMS’s capability in Smartphone development.
Owing to their tight schedules, Johnson and Himari will support the project remotely from their home countries during the design and testing phrase of the project.They will only travel to Singapore if necessary.

(b) Before the project starts, BMS CEO briefed you on the management’s expectations: •BPhone must fully comply to the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standards as BPhone cannot be sold without the IEC certification. •The project shall start on 1 August 2020. The BMS’s Marketing Department requests that BPhone to be launched by Black Friday, which is 27 November 2020, for it to be sold online in major Ecommerce platforms. However, the management wants it to be ready even earlier if possible. •An appropriate budget has yet to be worked out. Although finance is tight, any subsequent increments justifiable will be approved by him. It will be good to achieve a Cost Performance Index (CPI) of at least 1.0.
