For this assignment, find and close read two texts that (1) have a substantial relationship between them and (2) are related to the topical interest of this module. Write an essay in which you establish a clear and interesting connection between the two and provide an argument that rationalizes this relationship.
In paper 1, you were asked to write a close reading essay that attempted to find, within a given text, an issue or problem that might be of interest to your reader. You were also asked to locate the evidence of this problem from within the text and to show how the evidence could present a resolution to the problem. While this essay aimed at getting you to practise some basic rhetorical skills of writing as well as critical reading and thinking skills, it was admittedly a difficult assignment. This is especially so since the nature of academic writing is seldom so involuted: most academic writing expect your evidence to come from a wide range of sources.
For paper 2, we will now begin to look for evidence elsewhere and to practise incorporating this evidence into an argument needed to support the thesis of a close reading essay. So to a large extent, this assignment should be seen as an extension of paper 1. In most respects you will, as in paper one, need to find an interesting problem or puzzle (motive) and to propose to your readers what is significant about this or how it might be resolved (thesis). However, unlike the first paper, what you will be doing here is to develop your motive and thesis based on two texts. There are two different ways of doing so, and they are explained below.
Lens Analysis vs Comparative Analysis
In a lens analysis, the problem or puzzle comes from the first (which we can call the primary) text. Oftentimes, the resolution or explanation of this problem may not exist within the primary text itself. So you will have to find this by looking at another text (the secondary text). This secondary text may already have explicit arguments made regarding your primary text or may provide more implicit theory that will help you make sense of the first. Hence, in a lens analysis,
, the secondary text acts as a “lens” that helps you clarify or formulate thoughts about the primary text.
In a comparative analysis, you will also be working with two primary sources and using both to help you come up with a motive. In order to do this, you compare and contrast the texts with each other, so much so that it is only after close reading the texts that you can then identify the interest, puzzle, or problem. Since you aren’t using a third (or more) source at this point, the thesis will also be derived from your observations of these two sources.
