Dr. Death
Harold Fredrick Shipman, also known as Fred, was born January 14th, 1946 in Nottingham, England. He was born into a middle-class family of five and the middle child of his two siblings. Fred’s parents were Vera and Harold Shipman. His father was a lorry driver, while his mother had been ill for some years. Both Fred and his mother had an unbreakable bond, which then became obvious that he was the favorite child. Out of the three children, Fred was the bright child. During high school, Fred was known for being an excellent rugby player. Many of his teammates would often describe Fred as a good guy. While watching a documentary on Shipman, an old schoolmate stated, “Fred was a very quiet, calm individual, until he got on the rugby field” (Bob Studholme).
Vera Shipman was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Unfortunately, she had been battling this illness for years. During her fight with cancer, she was introduced to a new drug called “Morphine”. Doctors were in hope that the drug would alleviate the pain she was experiencing. Sadly, Vera passed away at the age of 42 and Fred was just 17 when he lost his mother. After the death of Shipman’s mother, it affected his life significantly. Shipman then became highly invested in himself and made sure he would later become a doctor. Shipman received a

scholarship and graduated from Leeds School of Medicine. Disappointingly, during the beginning of his career in the 70’s Shipman became addicted to opiates. While Shipman battled his struggles with opiates. Many people suspect the death of his mother lead him to later spiral out of control.
Which leads to the reason why I chose to write about Dr. Harold Shipman. During the years between 1970 and 1998, Harold Shipman was convicted of the murder. Not only murder, but in fact Dr. Harold Shipman also known as “Dr. Death” is one of the top serial killers in history. During the time of his addiction to opiates, he was released from the practice he worked at. While Shipman began to create his own clientele, after working with another practice. He soon gained the respect from both doctors and patients. After some years, Dr. Shipman decided to start his own practice. Shipman surgery clinic was called “The Surgery” located on Market street in Manchester. It is believed that he mostly targeted elderly women, but at times also killed men. Shipman often killed his patients will lethal injections. Altogether Dr. Shipman killed over 220 patients. It is said that he possibly killed more patients, but due to lack of evidence we will never know. Following his conviction in 2001, three years later Dr. Shipman committed suicide.
In the end I chose to write about this doctor because I believe the death of his mother possibly led him to the murder these people. Though Shipman was 17, it is obvious this traumatic event affected him psychologically. The question that many people must have is why? After watching the documentary and coming up with my own conclusions. I think it was clear that maybe he believed the doctors did not do their best to keep his mother alive. Since his mother was prescribed the new drug morphine, I also found it a coincidence that he killed his patients with high dosages of this drug as well. Lastly, it is said that losing a parent a young age can impact the brain. Since Shipman was not fully developed mentally speaking, this may have caused the doctor to cope with the loss of his mother negatively.
