Mini Research Project

Instructions: You are going to complete a mini research project that should included the following. Please read carefully and make sure to include all necessary parts.

1) Select one of the following topics to do your mini project on:
a. Attitudes towards drug use
b. Perceptions of police misuse of force
c. Mental health consequences of victimization
d. Attitudes towards police reform
e. Attitudes towards injustice in the criminal justice system
f. Fear of crime on campus
g. Police interactions with special needs populations
2) After selecting a topic, conduct a literature review to gather more information on the topic. Use at least 5 journal articles dated within the past 5 year. You will need toprovide a short summary on your topic based upon your research. Remember to cite your sources in APA format.
3) Once you have done some background research on your topic, create a hypothesis that discusses the relationship between two variables related to your topic. For example, if your topic was attitudes towards drug use, you may hypothesize that males may have more favorable attitudes towards drug use than females. For this project, make sure that your two variables are at the nominal or ordinal level of measurement.
4) Create a short survey to measure the variables in your hypothesis, and any other relevant variables you think may be related to your topic. This survey should have at least10 questions, and the majority of these questions should be closed-ended.
5) Once you have your survey questions ready, you need to create an account in Qualtrics and create an online survey. To do this:
a. go to . Use your WCU email information to create an account. 
b. Select “Create new project”
c. Select create your own “survey”
d. Fill in a project name, leave it on “blank project”, and select the blue “GET STARTED” button on the right hand side of the screen
e. You will now be able to create your own questions. You can play around with the different options. On the right hand side of the screen you can change the question type. You can have it set to single answer or multiple answer. To add a skip pattern (contingency) question, you can select the settings wheel on the left below the question number and select “add skip logic,” etc. There are lots of options and the best way to learn is to take some time playing with it.
f. Clicking the blue “PREVIEW” button will allow you to see what your survey will look like.
g. Once you have your questions complete and you are ready to collect responses, you will click the green “PUBLISH” button.
6) Now that your survey is ready, you can start collecting data. You will want to go to “Distributions” in Qualtrics and there will be several options for sending out your survey. Though the gold standard in research is to conduct a probability sample, for this exercise a convenience sample will be just fine. The easiest thing to do is to select the option to “get a single reusable link.” This will allow you to create a link to your survey that you can copy and paste onto your social media, text friends and family, post to blackboard for other classmates to participate, email, etc. 
7) You will need to get at least 20 responses to your survey. 
8) Once you have at least 20 responses, it’s time to look at the data you’ve collected. In Qualtrics, you can utilize “Data and Analysis” or “Reports” to explore your data.  To look at the relationship between the two variables from your hypothesis, use the “Crosstab” function in the “Data and Analysis” tab and report your findings.
9) Now you should have everything you need to create your final product.

FINAL PRODUCT

1) You will create a paper that summarizes your research projects as well as a video. The paper will consist of all of the items in your video – just in written form – and will be turned in on Monday, November 22 (prior to the in classpresentations). 
2) The paper will be laid out as follows: 1) Introduction, 2) literature review, 3) research question, 4) data and methods (what are your main variables of interest, how did you collect your data, how many responses did you collect), 5) results, 6) discussion and conclusion, 7) references. Length suggestions are as follows: 1) 1 paragraph; 2) 1 page; 3) 1 paragraph; 4) 1 page; 5) 1 – 3 pages (with VISUALS); 6) 2 paragraphs; 7) as long as needed.
3) You will create a three – five minute video summarizing your mini-research project. You can use any software you would like to record your video. An easy way to record a video would be to use Zoom or Panapto. Videos should be in mp4 format.
4) Your video should include visuals. You can create a powerpoint and narrate through the project, or you can just post up pictures or visuals in other formats as you are discussing your project.
5) Each summary should have the following parts:
a. Introduce yourself and the topic you selected.
b. Briefly summarize the background information on your topic you uncovered from your review of the literature. Post up a visual of at least 5 sources in APA format.
c. State your hypothesis, identifying the two variables in your hypothesis and the rationale behind your hypothesis.
d. Discuss the variables in your survey, including all ofthe actual questions along with the answer choices. Briefly discuss why you included those variables in your study.
e. Discuss how you distributed your survey, how many respondents you had, the dates you collected your responses, and who you think took your survey (if you know). Generally speaking it is best for surveys to be anonymous, but you may know that your roommates or classmates or perhaps your mom even took the survey.
f. Provide basic descriptive information for key variables in your survey. You do not have to do this for each variable, just pick out the most interesting findings. When presenting this information, use visuals like frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, or histograms.
g. Remember to present the crosstab for the two variables from your hypothesis. Discuss if your hypothesis was supported or not.
h. Finally, conclude your video by discussing what you liked and/or did not like about conducting research and what you learned about research from this experience.
6) Your video will be shown for the class, and you will be available to take questions after it is shown.
