Architecture, Culture, and Progress
A topic I find fascinating is how a country or region’s history, culture, and innovation are reflected in its architecture. You can see how different groups of people created structures that represented their faith, culture, and beliefs. This was one of the reasons that I took Decatur High School’s architecture course. Over the past three years, I learned about the different building styles, architectural movements, and the process of making a building. Something I found interesting was just how specific building codes were. To me, it shows how far modern architects go in order to ensure the safety of the people who use their buildings. It also shows how living standards have changed compared to the early 20th century. These rigorous safety standards have been developed using the flaws of older buildings and spaces as a foundation and therefore are a symbol of progress.
Many architectural periods are tied to larger cultural or artistic movements. One example is the Renaissance period of architecture. This is one of my favorite architectural periods because it brought back older techniques, specifically Roman ones, while still innovating and progressing. The Duomo in Florence is an important cathedral. It was built in the 1400s and was the largest dome in Europe for centuries. This was only possible because of the measures its architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, took. Brunelleschi was not a professional architect when he was hired, he was a goldsmith. Not only did he find a way to make the massive dome stand on its own, but he also invented the reverse gear in order to move the materials. Brunelleschi’s reverse gear was a series of three gears that when rotated were able to pull up heavy objects. This is one of my favorite parts of architecture. The Florence Cathedral is a place where science, history, and culture overlap. It is one of the first Renaissance-era buildings and gives us the opportunity to glimpse into the minds of the Florentines at the time. Following this, more churches, monuments, homes, and theaters would use the Renaissance styles.
Architecture can serve as a time machine that takes us to the past. When I visited my hometown in India, my cousins took me to Qutb Minar Complex in Dehli. The Qutb Minar Complex was a mosque built on old Hindu and Jain temples. It is a remnant of the powerful Sultanates that once ruled over India. The Qutb Minar was inspired by the Afghan Minaret of Jam. It is a large tower over 200 feet tall and stands above the rest of the complex. The Sultans named the Qutb Minar after a Muslim religious figure and it took nearly 30 years to complete. Construction is believed to have been finished in 1215 CE. The complex also has the Iron Pillar of Dehli, a 23 feet tall metal pillar created during the reign of Chandragupta II, one of the most famous Hindu emperors. It is believed to have been erected in 402 CE, over 800 years before the Qutub Minar. To me, this shows the fusion between the Hindu and Islamic worlds that occurred in India. It was an experience that pushed me to pay more attention to the buildings all around me.
Learning about a region’s architecture is a great way to learn its history as well. The Duomo and the Qutub Minar Complex are examples of this. The Duomo is a symbol of renaissance Italy and the social changes that came with it. The Qutub Minar represents the fusion between the Hindu and Muslim worlds under the Sultanate of Dehli. Visiting and observing sites like these is an experience that everyone should try.
