The final writing exercise is an extension of the first two, an opportunity to apply what you have
learned in terms of writing strategies.
Length
• Minimum length: 4-6 pages (1,500 words)
Text requirements
• By the end of the semester, you must have discussed in a substantive way at least two of the
texts that we have read. So, if your first two writing exercises discussed the same play, this one
must primarily consider at least one other play (although it’s fine to bring in any of the texts
we’ve read to enhance your discussion).
Format
• Save your paper as a Word document
• Double-space
• Use 1” margins
• Use Times New Roman font, sized 12 point
• Ask me if you do not understand or are having difficulty with any of these formatting
requirements
Content Checklist
Focus and clarity
• Does your essay include a clear topic sentence embedded in the first paragraph, which you have
underlined?
• Is your topic singular and narrow, as we have discussed those guidelines for the previous essay
you wrote? (If you submitted your final paper topic to me, I gave you feedback regarding this
point.)
• Does every point you make relate back to your topic sentence, illuminating your subject further?
• Are you explicit about how your points relate back to your subject?
• If your topic contains terms that might be interpreted variously by different readers, and might
hide your own assumptions about these terms, you must define them for your reader up front
and speak to how your examples reflect the definition you are working with. Examples of terms
I’ve encountered that require the student’s definition are “madness” and “true love.” When in
doubt, define your terms.
Think interpretively (this is not a “book report”)
• Are you demonstrating interpretive thought in this essay? Or are you simply writing a book
report, that is, stating plot points, but not offering a deeper understanding that you have cometo by reflecting upon the text, its language, its themes, its characters, its story? Are you digging
beneath the surface of the text? Uncovering an understanding that wasn’t visible to you upon
first glance?
• To do this, you will need to re-read the texts.
Quotations
• Do you back up all the claims you make with quotations from the text? In other words, your
essay should contain multiple quotations.
• Have you contextualized your quotations, as well as moments from the play that you have
referenced, telling your reader who is speaking, when, and why? When writing academic essays
in literature, it is a good rule of thumb to assume that your reader is only familiar with these
plays in a very general way.
• Do you demonstrate that you are considering the quotations you are using in a careful manner?
For example, have you “translated” them for your reader? Explained their meaning? Have you
considered the word choice Shakespeare uses, what meaning it adds? Have you considered the
figurative language your quotations might use, what meaning it adds?
Style
• Have you italicized play titles? Example: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
• If you have had difficulty with run-on sentences in the past exercises, have you worked to
correct those? (See helpful link in directions for Writing Exercise #2.)
• Have you corrected any recurring grammar issues I have pointed out in your previous work?
• Re-read your essay for mistakes. If your essay appears to be carelessly written, you will not
receive a good grade. In other words, show me that you’re trying. That’s what I care about!
Do not plagiarize
According to university policy, this must result in a failing grade.
How to bump up your grade on this exercise
Cite your quotations properly. I have done my best to help you in this area with my written instructions,
my verbal guidance in class, and my comments to you in your writing and in your Blackboard posts. If
you’re hovering between grades, proper citation will do you a favor.
Common errors: knowing when to use a block quote, how to format a block quote, how to indicate a
line break when you’re not using a block quote, what punctuation and spacing to use in your
parenthetical citations.
Proper citation has become an index for me to gauge your engagement in this class. If you are still not
making an effort to cite properly, it indicates to me that you are not paying attention or trying.
