The student must integrate the following sources into their responses to the prompts below: Two secondary sources (source written by a historian scholarly article or monograph) and one primary source (letters, diaries or speeches from people who lived during the various time periods). 3 is the minimum number of sources, but using more is encouraged. Sources must be cited in the text as you write as well as at the end of your document.

**DO NOT copy and paste the contents of your primary source into your paper.** You are to cite the source so that you can reference it, but it should not be included in full. Direct quotes from any sources should be used sparingly. Excessive direct quotes will be removed from the page/word count. The 1500 words should be MOSTLY your own.

Any information that you did not already know (i.e. any information you learned from your sources) must be cited (even when youre putting the information in your own words.) In-line citations should be included at the end of the sentence or paragraph directly following that information.

For example, if the first 3 sentences of a paragraph are based on information from Source A, you would end the third sentence of that paragraph with an inline citation including the page numbers. If the rest of the paragraph is your own opinion/analysis, you dont need to cite that. If you are using information from source B in sentence 5 of that paragraph, you would put the in-line citation at the end of that sentence.

Your paper must address each of the following prompts while integrating the various sources into a narrative essay. (But please label each section with the corresponding letter.)

Directions: Choose an important human advancement from a time and place in our class historical timeline (beginning to 1600). For example: agriculture, metal tools and weapons, shipbuilding, Greek philosophy, Roman engineering, exploration, religion, writing, printing press, medicine, music, art or any other you find. You can also narrow the choice down, such as agriculture from monks in the dark ages or medicine from ancient Egypt. (You will be asked to connect the advancement you choose to your academic major, so think about that as you choose.)

1. Explain: Describe what advancement you chose and why. Be sure to include the time and place.

2. Evidence: Please explain how your human advancement choice occurred. Was it through technology, politics, learning institutions, culture shifts, religious shifts, art, agriculture, population, economics, or some other means? Did it occur through discovery, by accident, as a result of another occurrence, or to solve a problem?

3. Integration: Please explain how your academic major is connected to at least one point in history and to your human advancement choice. The purpose of this is to show you can look at and analyze your choice from a different perspective.

For example, if your major is computer programming, describe how history has influenced and changed computer programming, such as from a warehouse sized computer to a tiny microchip. Or how computer programming has changed history, such as advances in communication? Be sure to include an explanation how the specific human advancement you picked is connected to your major.

*If you are a general education major or history major, then you can pick one of these majors: art, agriculture, medical, religious, political, music, economics, technology, communications, mathematics, literature, science.*

4. Context: Explain how your human advancement was viewed in the context of its time (this would be at its inception). Show analysis of its strengths, weaknesses, unexpected consequences, or conflicts.

Was it recognized as an advancement or was it rejected? How is it viewed in todays world?

5. Student Position: Explain how/why humans are better or worse off today because of this human advancement.

6. Conclusions: Based on what you have learned from this assignment, explain your conclusions about the value of your human advancement, in the past and in the present. Explain its value to your major. Will it continue to advance humanity or will it fade into history?
