What’s an exploratory draft?

Before writing a finalized formal essay, many writers write a rough draft. One kind of rough draft is an exploratory draft. An exploratory draft is what it sounds like. It’s an informal draft in which writers "explore" ideas that they’d like to write about more formally.

What’s the format of an exploratory draft?

An exploratory draft may look like a formal essay or it may look like a collection of notes with a few fully formed paragraphs. It may include numbered or bulleted lists. For example, you may list three or more quotes from other authors that you’d like to analyze or compare with your own experience. You may list important points you’d like to make. If the ultimate goal is to write a 6-7 page formal essay (which it is) then an exploratory draft may be anywhere pages long. It depends on the writer.

What should you put in your exploratory draft?

I would like your exploratory draft to be organized into four sections. For ease of reading, please head each section with the bold words bulleted here.

Quotes: In a section that’s very much like the one you write in your reading responses, list quotes from any of the material we’ve looked at in class so far. That includes two essays, a short story, a podcast, a song, and a short film. In the case of the film, since there really aren’t quotes, you want to paraphrase. Choose a scene or two that you find significant and put those scenes into your own words. Just like in your reading responses, write about why you find each quote important. Do you agree or disagree with it? Do you find it interesting because you’d never thought of it before? Is it funny? Inspiring? Sad? You may take what you’ve already written in a reading response and build on it here. For this section, list no less than 6 quotes. A paraphrased scene from the short film counts as one quote. For the sake of easy reading, organize your quotes in a bulleted or numbered list. Thanks!
Connections: In this section, attempt to discover a unifying thread through the quotes you’ve included. This section should be written in paragraphs. It may be as short as one page or it may be a few pages (double-spaced for ease of reading!). You may discuss here how Joni Mitchell’s song, Jane Goodall’s essay, James Baldwin’s essay, or the short film all illustrate different aspects of disillusionment and grief. For example, in the discussion of Joni Mitchell’s song, some people noticed how the subject of the song and the protagonist from the film were both dealing with growing up (the singer dealing with their own growing up and the protagonist having a son who grew up); however, each character dealt with their reality a little differently. The protagonist imagined a new son to replace her son who had grown up. Thus, her situation improved, temporarily. Her imagination could only take her so far. Meanwhile, the singer of the song seemed to be in a place where they realized that their imagination thoroughly colored how they saw the world. She seems to have just experienced an epiphany that leaves her with a sense of existential angst. Arguably, both James Baldwin and Jane Goodall also suffer from existential angst. Goodall describes an experience that, for her, relieves that angst, while Baldwin, in his conclusion, maps a path forward that might relieve his angst. In their own ways, all of these writers and characters illustrate people dealing with their beliefs and loss of beliefs.
Topic Paragraph(s): For the beginning, I would like you to write a paragraph (or paragraphs) that attempts to define your topic and what you will say about it. The final draft will call for a formal thesis statement, but at this point I just want you to explore ideas. You may have more than one. For example, based on class materials, your topic may be "a time you believed in something that you no longer believe" or it may be "dealing with disillusionment." In this section, simply tell me in a paragraph or two what you think your topic is and what you think you can say about it.
Takeaway: Finally, in one or two sentences, write what you’d like a reader to takeaway from your essay. What’s the point? Why should readers care?
