Module 3 Analysis

Follow these guidelines for the article analysis. It’s pretty easy, since you just follow the outline as is. I just don’t have the time to do it. The outline is in the order of the article.

I have attached an example of what it’s supposed to look like and a blank outline.

The links to the 2 CQ Researcher articles for the analysis (Reparations of Slavery, and Police Under Scrutiny) are also down below. It’s 1200 words total per article analysis, so 2400 words in total.

Analysis 2 Issues in Higher Education

Word Count: 1200

Policy Questions

Q1 Are partisan divisions having a negative effect on higher education?

Yes 1:  Conservative lawmakers are cutting funding to higher education because of supposed liberalism in universities and the presentation of topics and subjects that they do not like.

Yes 2: There has been an increasing number of clashes between students and conservatives at Universities. Indicating that schools have increasingly become political battlegrounds and partisan.

No 1: Accusations of higher education institutions being partisan are unfounded as many universities have free speech principles and do not suppress conservative ideas.

No 2: Higher education is still enhancing the economy and providing qualified workers to society and the workforce, so many threats to cut funding are never followed through.

Q2 Should universities focus more on job training?

Yes 1: Many universities are producing too many students with degrees that do not provide work skills. They should instead be focusing on teaching technical skills needed in the workforce.

Yes 2: The workforce needs workers, and many students are pursuing social degrees. Many jobs do not require traditional degrees, therefore colleges should teach more practical skills in expedited study programs.

No 1: College already prepares students for careers especially for vocational ones. For instance, science and engineering are vocational in nature and English majors often become teachers.

No 2: All degrees are practical and can lead to jobs, even if not associated with a particularly necessary career. Universities are meant for research, not just job training.

Q3 Are four-year degrees worth the cost?

Yes 1: Just because there are alternatives to traditional four-year degrees, not all of them are quality programs, and not all of the alternative programs would necessarily enable a student to be able to find a job.

Yes 2: Four-year degrees are worth the costs because they are shown to increase future wages and there is a sizable income gap between those who have at least a four-year degree and those who do not.

No 1: Not all jobs require a four-year degree therefore the time spent and the money paid may be wasted on unnecessary education for the job a student desires.

No 2: The increase in wage-earning associated with four-year college degrees is accompanied by an increasing amount of debt. Students can avoid the debt associated by taking vocational programs, thus reducing the costs of education and increasing the speed at which one can find a job.

Article Title: Is College Worth The Cost? Pros Vs. Cons

Date: March 31, 2021

Author: Kat Tretina

Source: Forbes Advisor

Web-site address: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/student-loans/is-college-worth-it/  (Links to an external site.)

Article Summary: The article addresses the perception that a degree is necessary and weighs the benefits against the increasing costs of obtaining a degree. Many aspects must be considered when deciding if a four-year college degree is worth it. Regarding the positives, college degrees are beneficial because those with a bachelors degree earn almost $30,000 more, on average than those with a diploma. Likewise, many sough-out jobs require a college education, and data indicate that soon more than 60% of jobs will require a degree. Further, college graduates are much more likely to have employer health insurance than those with diplomas, saving them much more money. Regarding the negatives, the main downside is that college graduates often leave with student debt, which can take decades to pay off. Likewise, there is no assurance that a top-paying job will be available even after spending four years paying for school. However, there are alternatives to a four-year college degree such as Community College, vocational programs, and trade schools, which can provide the necessary certifications to obtain a high-paying job, while decreasing educational costs.

Article Evaluation: This article objectively compares the pros and cons of attending a four-year college. Many of the reasons for and against attending college are similar to those provided by the CQ article, however, this update article provides specific information about the costs. From a numerical perspective, the article indicates that the net benefits of possessing a college degree are greater than the net costs. For instance, regarding average salaries, for those with diplomas, it is about $38,000, while the average amount for those with bachelors degrees is about $65,000. Even minus the cost of debt which averages around $29,000, the benefits of having a degree are still greater than the costs. Additionally, this calculation does not consider the cost of health insurance which is more likely to be covered by employers of those with at least a bachelors degree. While the article mentions that there are cheaper alternatives that can produce jobs with salaries similar to those with degrees, I feel like these jobs average salaries are still lower than the average for those with degrees. I believe that overall, this article shows the allure of having a degree.

Policy Assessment and Recommendation:

Q1: I do not believe that partisan divisions are influencing higher education, nor that universities are indoctrinating students with liberal attitudes. Rather, based on my experience, universities are free-speech and free-idea locations unburdened by partisanship, especially as many universities have free-speech policies and principles. Additionally, studies indicate that students come to respect both liberal and conservative ideas equally, illustrating that claims of liberal indoctrination are false. Moreover, just because students are generally more liberal does not mean that the University is indoctrinating them. Conversely, I believe that conservative lawmakers claiming liberal indoctrination are negatively affecting universities. By cutting funding and threatening to do so, because of partisan concerns, lawmakers are negatively affecting higher education and decreasing universities educational abilities and economic impact. Therefore, I recommend that lawmakers stop threatening higher education.

Q2: I do not believe that universities should focus more on career training, I believe that students should be able to choose what they want to study regardless of its benefits to the state.  Universities purpose is not to offer job training, they are locations of research and learning. I believe that degrees such as English are equally necessary, especially because they lead to jobs in education and other fields where workers are needed. Further, because there are already vocational schools that focus on career training, I dont believe that universities need to do so. I dont believe that just because some majors arent associated with certain jobs that they are useless and should be removed. As long as students continue to pursue those majors, I recommend that states and universities do not eliminate them, just because they cannot see their benefit.

Q3: I believe that four-year degrees are worth the cost, only when absolutely necessary. When weighing the net benefits of having a degree versus the net costs it appears that degrees are worth the costs. For instance, those with degrees make around $30,000 more than those without them. However, I do not believe that four-year degrees are always the best option, whether it is cost-effective depends on a persons career objectives. I believe that if ones desired job can be obtained by simply getting technical training, then a four-year degree is likely not cost-effective. Ultimately, the decision is a personal one, which should be carefully considered. I recommend that more technical programs be made available, however, not at the expense of traditional universities.
