When providing your feedback present the logic behind it. 1. Main Post: What are the most and least effective pick-up lines you have ever heard or tried? How do they fit with exiting research on this topic?  Well as a guy I rarely get hit on, that is usually my job to approach someone and lay down a witty pickup line. I say that to set the stage for the one time a woman did approach me and hit me with a pickup line. The pickup line was this: “Boy you are proof that aliens are real, because I think that you just abducted my heart”. I laughed so hard and besides the fact it was a rare occasion of a woman hitting on a man that is why I remembered it. Now there is a study where they were trying to find out why pickup lines do or don’t work on women. One study found that if the pickup line is creative and rememberable they have a higher chance of succeeding. “The women’s preference of the more creative language indicated a degree of evolutionary significance to the researchers—basically, that a more creative pick-up line might mean you’re more intelligent, and thus more attractive as a potential partner (Daswick, 2017). With that being said if you were to approach a women in a bar with the same old boring pickup line such as “Are you from Tennessee? Because you’re the only Ten I See” then I doubt you will keep the woman’s attention. Now if you at least make her laugh with a pickup line such as “Is your name Google? Because you have everything I’ve been searching for” you may stand a chance according to the study. I have to agree with the study on this because I am a funny guy by nature and when I was single making a girl laugh seemed to be the best way to get and keep the girls attention. In another approach to get a woman’s attention beside pick uplines can be effective as well. There are social media applications that allow for men to send pick up line to women constantly so they may not work even if they are funny. So another approach was to make the female comfortable in another way like noted here in a study: “People think that negging is an insult designed to lower a woman’s self-esteem so she’ll then seek validation from you. The truth is that a neg is a statement or action designed to temporarily disqualify oneself as a potential suitor, like a guy blowing his nose in front of a girl. It’s designed for her comfort if she feels the guy is coming on too strong” (Yuan, 2017). Now once a man has the attention of a female how can he keep it? How can he stop the woman from losing interest? What does a man need to have or do for a woman to be interested in a few hours, days, or maybe for the rest of their mortal lives together? A study found that a man needs to be put together and mature or a woman to take him seriously: “Among women, 96 percent say financial responsibility is important, compared to 87 percent noting physical attractiveness as an important quality. Men slightly favor good looks over financial responsibility (92 percent versus 91 percent) but, on average, financial responsibility is second only to personal compatibility when picking out Mr./Mrs. Right” (PR Newswire, 2013). In conclusion it seems for a man to be successful in meeting, gaining/keeping a woman’s attention, then making her truly like you long term is a package deal. You must be witty, creative, mature, and somewhat successful in life to get the girl. When it comes to the strict pickup line portion of the situation, you just need to have confidence to try something unique and you’ll be off to a great start. Would you like to be a part of that?” Social scientists have concluded that we form first impressions such as likability and attractiveness extremely fast – in just a fraction of a second (Lehmiller, 2017). Although it is not everything, the first look and impression is very important. Poor pick-up lines and effective pick-up lines directly have to do with affective influences. A poor pick-up would be something the other person found offensive or disrespectful. This person would experience a negative effect which would result in negative evaluations (Lehmiller, 2017). The example I gave is pretty arrogant and cheesy. Someone in a bad mood, or even a good mood for that matter, might find it extremely disrespectful and/or degrading. An effective pick-up line would be one that was clever and genuinely makes the other person laugh or feel good. An effective pick-up line would result in evaluating that person positively. It is so true that the way to a person’s heart does not include belittlement (Lehmiller, 2017). The example I gave is very respectful and it gives the individual the option to say yes or no to joining the other individual. Social scientists have also discovered that a person’s mood can have an effect on the way we feel about someone when we meet them for the first time. Thus, it would be wise to use an effective pick up line when a person is happy, smiling, and just in an overall good mood.  Our textbook dives into some very important factors to take into consideration before using a pick-up line on somebody. The propinquity effect states that the closer two people are physically, the more likely they are to develop an attraction (Lehmiller, 2017). The mere exposure effect states that the more familiar we are with that individual, the more we tend to like them (Lehmiller, 2017). Similarity such as demographic profiles, attitudes, age, and education levels for example can be a “driving force” in developing romantic attraction (Lehmiller, 2017). If these factors are present in addition to that person being in a good mood, an effective pick-up line can be extremely effective when it comes to developing a relationship with that person.  An effective pick up line can be the beginning of various types of sexual activity – hookups, friends with benefits, or a more serious and mutual kind of sex life (Lehmiller, 2017). It could also be the beginning of various types of committed relationships – passionate love, companionate love, consummate love, etc. (Lehmiller, 2017). Finally, an effective pick up line could be the beginning of various types of commitment – monogamous, non-monogamous, ect (Lehmiller, 2017).
