MGT 3324: Case Analysis Guidelines and Rubric
Overview:
You will complete three different case analysis assignments throughout this course. Completing these assignments will support your
understanding of why projects fail and illustrate how a project manager might foresee or predict project problem areas. These assignments
illustrate the importance of project planning, organizing, and monitoring/controlling activities so that a project is completed as successfully as
possible given the ever-present risk considerations during a project.
Directions:
To complete this assignment, you will review and select one of the cases from Project Management Institute | Case Studies and write a 1- to
2-page analysis of the case, focusing on classic mistakes from the perspective of people, process, product, or technology.
Note: See the module’s assignment description for information on which specific knowledge area to address for Section 5 below: Impact of
Module-Specific Knowledge Areas
Your written analysis should be organized under the following headings and address the information described for each section:
1. Summary (of the facts presented). Begin your analysis with a concise synthesis of the facts in the case, under the heading “Summary.”
Stick to one or two sentences and do not include any discussion of problems or recommendations for solutions in the Summary section.
2. Analysis (of case questions). The most important section of your case analysis comes under the heading “Analysis.” This section should
be the longest, most thorough section of your analysis. Project managers cannot solve problems unless they can first identify them.
Recognizing problems and then understanding the nature of those problems is the proper beginning of all managerial action. The analysis
of the classic mistakes should focus on one or several project perspectives (people, process, product, or technology). Solutions generally
fall into place relatively easily once problems are recognized and understood. There are often several viable solutions to problems in a
case, but you cannot implement any of them if you cannot identify the problems. It is important that there are references to the assigned
reading in the Analysis section. Your grade will depend, to a large degree, on how many appropriate, logical references you include in
your analysis.

3. Recommendations (if applicable to the case questions). Next, write your recommendations about how to address the problems or case
issue in a section titled “Recommendations.” Arrange the recommendations in order of priority. It is vitally important that you include
references to the assigned reading in the Recommendations section too. If there are questions or issues raised in the case assignment
section, include the answers to these questions in your Recommendations section.
4. Implications (of your recommendations if or if not implemented). In your “Implications” section, outline the implications that your
recommendations will have on the operation of the organization in the short or long term and how project management tools and
techniques could have mitigated the issues noted. In other words, if your recommendations are implemented, what changes will the
organization in general have to make to the way they do things now and in the future? Include appropriate references in this section too.
5. Impact of Module-Specific Knowledge Areas (See the module’s assignment description for information on which specific knowledge
area to address). To be successful as a project manager, one must understand the potential impacts of the identified problems or issues
across the appropriate knowledge area(s). In your “Impact of Module-Specific Knowledge Areas” section, you should detail specific case
assignment impacts to the assigned knowledge areas for the module. Each case scenario will present some project challenges that will
invariably affect one or several knowledge areas. Explain the impacts and recommend how best to avoid or mitigate those impacts
using specific tools and techniques. If the assigned knowledge area(s) is not affected, indicate “not applicable” under that section in
your submission.
Guidelines for Submission: Your case analysis assignment must be submitted as Word document, 1 to 2 pages in length, double-spaced, with
12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Any references must be cited in APA format.
Instructor Feedback: This activity uses an integrated rubric in Blackboard. Students can view instructor feedback in the Grade Center.
