Define self-efficacy and self-esteem Discussion 5
Topic 4 DQ 1: Define self-efficacy and self-esteem. How are these concepts different? Which appears to be more important when raising children who will someday seek out careers of their own? Why is this the case? 300 words
Topic 4 DQ 2: Watch some form of media (television or film) list five different jobs you can observe males being employed in, make a similar list for females. Share your list with the class. Do these groupings have anything in common? Consider if the work is very similar or very diverse within the gender grouping. What themes do you observe? Also, state which list you finished first and if you had any trouble finishing the second list. 450 words
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument. ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Define self-efficacy and self-esteem Discussion 5
Self-efficacy is the belief that you can do something. Self-esteem is your sense of worth, especially in relation to other people. The two are related but they’re not exactly the same thing. When we have low confidence and low self-esteem, it can make us feel more anxious and depressed than we would otherwise be. But if you want to boost your self esteem or help someone with low self esteem, then don’t worry! Just keep reading!
Self-efficacy is the belief that you can do something. It’s a belief in your ability to succeed at a task or achieve an objective, like mastering a new skill or running a mile without stopping. Self-efficacy can be measured as how confident you feel when trying something new and challenging: if you’re confident that you can easily complete the task, then it’s likely that your self-efficacy is high!
For example: if someone says “I have never been to New York City”, but then goes on vacation there for three days with their family and friends, they might feel less confident about their ability to enjoy themselves once they get back home again because they did not accomplish what they set out originally (i.e., visiting New York City).
Self-esteem is your sense of worth, especially in relation to other people. People with high self-esteem have a strong sense of self worth and believe that they deserve happiness, success and other positive things. They tend to be optimistic about their future and make good choices now based on this belief.
People with low self-esteem focus more on their past failures, are pessimistic about the future and take risks that may lead them into trouble.
Self-efficacy and self-esteem are not the same thing, but they’re related. Self-efficacy is the belief you have in your ability to do something. It’s about your belief that you can achieve something, whether it’s learning how to play tennis or learning how to code a website.
Self-esteem refers to how much others think of you as an individual and what kind of person you think yourself being. If someone says nice things about me, then I feel good about myself; if someone doesn’t like me, then my sense of worth drops dramatically!
A person’s self-esteem is a personal thing. It’s not something that you can help someone else with, and it’s not something you can change. You can’t make someone think better of themselves or lower their self esteem if they don’t already feel that way about themselves.
The closer two people are in terms of self-esteem, the less likely they are to be able to help each other if either experience a loss of self-esteem (or even just one). This means that even though people who are similar may have very different factors contributing towards their levels of confidence, those differences don’t affect how much support they’ll give each other.
For example: A man who has low confidence might find himself unable to offer any advice when his friend needs some guidance on how he should deal with his situation at work because he doesn’t have enough experience making decisions himself nor has anyone close enough who could give him advice; whereas another man with high confidence would be able assist his friend despite being only slightly less knowledgeable than him due partly because he knows more people within the same industry who might be able give good advice if needed later down road while still maintaining high levels themselves through regular interaction between coworkers/colleagues leading up until now.”
When you have low confidence and low self-esteem, it can make you feel more anxious and depressed than you would otherwise be.
Why? Because when we don’t know ourselves well enough to trust our own judgment, we may worry that other people will think less of us because of the way we look or behave. This fear can cause us to avoid situations where we might feel judged by others (such as parties) or even take on behaviors that may seem appropriate in front of others but are actually damaging for our wellbeing (for example: binge eating).
Self-efficacy is the belief that you can do something. It’s a powerful determinant of behavior, but unfortunately it’s difficult to boost self-efficacy with practice alone. Instead, we must understand how our brain processes information and use that knowledge to change our behavior in new ways.
If you don’t feel like doing anything today, chances are good that your brain is telling you this message: “I’m not capable of succeeding at this task.” The more often your brain hears this message from others or internal sources (such as past experiences), the more negative reactions will occur when trying new tasks in future situations–and those negative reactions can lead directly back into old habits!
We all have a sense of self-efficacy and self-esteem. We can work to feel more confident, and build our self-esteem as well. But if you’re feeling down about yourself, it might be worth trying to look within and see what could boost your own confidence—then go out and succeed!
