When considering problem-solving in the work environment, professionals recognize it as an integral part of being human. To effectively apply problem-solving skills to a volunteer experience, I used the IDEAL problem-solving process developed by Bradford and Stein (1993). This process involves (I) Identifying the problem, (D) Defining the problem, (E) Exploring strategies, (A) Acting on ideas, and (L) Looking for effects.

In my volunteer experience, I found that problem-solving requires both creativity and logical thinking. According to A Kirn and L Benson in their 2018 article in the Journal of Engineering Education, problem-solving is “a process of understanding a situation, generating possible solutions, evaluating them and selecting the best one” (Kirn and Benson, 2018). This is an apt description of my own experience, since I had to first identify the problem, come up with potential solutions, and then evaluate each before making a decision. I had to be creative while problem-solving, since I often had to come up with solutions that had never been considered before. While this could be daunting at first, I learned to draw on my past experiences and knowledge to come up with creative solutions. Additionally, I had to be logical in order to evaluate potential solutions and determine which one was the most viable. Through this process, I was able to come up with a solution that not only met my needs but also those of the organization I was volunteering for. Kirn and Benson’s article accurately describes the problem-solving process that I experienced during my volunteer experience. It is clear that problem-solving requires both creativity and logical thinking, which is something that I had to employ in order to come up with a successful solution.

The IDEAL problem-solving process is a model proposed by JG Dees in the Journal of Business Ethics in 2012 that can be applied to volunteer work. This model encompasses five stages: Identify the problem, Define the problem, Explore the possible solutions, Act on the best solution, and Look back on the problem-solving process. This model can benefit volunteer work in a number of ways. Firstly, by focusing on the problem-solving process, volunteers are better able to identify potential problems and develop strategies to solve them. Secondly, by breaking down the problem into smaller, more manageable steps, volunteers can plan and strategize more efficiently. Finally, looking back on the problem-solving process helps volunteers to recognize areas for improvement, as well as identify successes. The IDEAL problem-solving process can therefore contribute to the success of volunteer work by allowing volunteers to make informed decisions, streamline the problem-solving process, and reflect on their experiences. I learned the IDEAL problem-solving process, and was able to identify, define, explore strategies, act, and assess the effectiveness of problem-solving strategies I implemented. For example, during my volunteer experience, I encountered a problem with an inexperienced member of my team.

By implementing the IDEA problem-solving process, I was able to define the issue, brainstorm potential solutions, and start taking constructive action. I came up with the idea of having a team meeting to develop a better system for delegating tasks, providing the inexperienced member with more one-on-one support, and establishing a clear understanding of expectations. The innovative solutions I implemented in this situation resulted in improved productivity and satisfaction from our team.
