As a student in cardiac nursing at our practicum site, we face many challenges and working conditions that could cause us to lose clients or fall victim to burnout. These factors lead to a lack of client satisfaction, which makes it difficult for us to keep our patients’ needs in mind. By considering how these challenges impact the way we do our job, I will be able to address challenges within my unit and take steps towards improving our service delivery.
The problems students face while working in a permanent clinical nurse position are numerous. In order to address these problems and provide an opportunity for students to begin learning how to resolve real situations, I am setting up a live simulation which will be used for my practicum class. I want to demonstrate the importance of communication as it relates to patient safety and develop student skills for evaluating self assessing physical assessment.
Nursing is the lifeline of health care. To make the most of their position and their abilities a nurse must be able to recognize when there are signs or symptoms that something may be wrong and how to help them if they are in need of immediate help.
The issue is that our patient populations are changing and we don’t have enough nurses to meet their needs.
The nursing problem I want to address is that it’s difficult for me to get nursing information from the patient. I feel this because the patients don’t want to tell the nurses what they can and cannot do. I have noticed that they would rather play it off then tell the nurse that they are fine when in reality they are not fine! One of the reasons why it’s hard for me as a nurse is because I don’t get feedback. If I do give feedback, it will be limited because of restrictions on what I can say (i.e., No coming out and about with charts visible), only some patients want to talk about certain things but not others – that usually happened in case two during my practicum .
The purpose of the practicum is to understand health care from a patient’s point of view. So I am assessing the nursing care I provide to each patient and then sharing what I have learned with others in their specialty. The problem for me to consider is that because of different preferences, some patients don’t like certain things when it comes time for them to receive an incision (injection) or blood draw. This can cause them to become uncomfortable and be in pain. To prevent this happening and also make sure they’re comfortable for any other procedures we may need to do, I had my mom teach me how to give injections herself. With this knowledge, she’ll be able out administering her own shots without me having to be involved.
