Furthermore, muscles can be classified according to their location, the type of contraction they produce, and the movement they cause. For example, muscles that produce movement at the shoulder joint, such as the rotator cuff muscles, are considered to be muscles of the shoulder girdle (Neumann, 2016). Similarly, muscles that move the elbow joint are referred to as muscles of the arm. The structure of the musculoskeletal system is also important in understanding the function of the muscles and other components. For instance, the bones of the skeleton are connected by joints, which provide a range of motion and stability and allow for the transfer of force between bones (Neumann, 2016). In addition, the muscles and other connective tissues of the body interact with one another to control movement and provide stability. Kinesiology, the scientific study of movement, is heavily reliant on an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system and how it interacts with the other systems of the body. By understanding the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, kinesiologists are able to better assess, diagnose, and treat movement-related issues.

Energy is the capacity of a system to do work and is determined by the application of force and the distance over which the force is applied (FE Zajac et al., 2002). By understanding these concepts, researchers can gain insight into the mechanics of human body movements, such as the forces and torques involved in the movement of a joint, or the energy required to complete a particular movement task (FE Zajac et al., 2002). This knowledge can then be used to improve the efficiency of movement or to develop treatments or therapies to correct or optimize movement patterns.
