Medicare eligibility is based on age and income. The poverty level (a formula that defines the percentage of a family’s income that can be spent on food, housing, health care and other needs) determines how much a person qualifies for Medicare benefits. The formula also takes into account household size and number of children in a household as well as other factors related to health insurance coverage.
Medicare eligibility is based on the modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) which is used by all states except Alaska, Florida and New Hampshire. MAGI is calculated by adding together your personal Adjusted Gross Income plus any amounts received from SSI or State Medical Assistance Programs (SMAAPs).
