Introduction

The City of Lawrence is committed to improving its public health through the development of a Community Health Problem & Improvement Plan. The purpose of this plan is to identify current health problems, identify solutions and set goals for improvement in order to protect the overall health status of our community.

In this section, you’ll introduce the problem and the solution. You can use any number of techniques to explain these concepts. You can use analogies or metaphors that are easy for people to understand; for example, if you’re talking about a community health problem with a group of students from your class, it might be helpful to show them an image of a broken pipe in their backyard or something similar to illustrate how bad things could get if left unaddressed.

Once you’ve explained what’s wrong with their neighborhood (or wherever), it’s time for some positive reinforcement! Tell them how much better things will be when someone comes along and fixes everything–and then make sure they know exactly who these heroes are so they can thank them later on today when they’re done helping out around town!

Problem 1 – Poor nutrition and eating disorders in our community.

Problem 2 – High level of drug and alcohol abuse in our community.

There is a high level of drug and alcohol abuse in our community. Drug and alcohol use is a leading cause of death, disability and hospitalization. There are many people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol and do not know how to stop using them. This can lead to serious health problems such as:

• Heart disease
• Liver cirrhosis (liver scarring)
• Stroke

Problem 3 – Lack of access to health care services in our community.

Access to health care services is a problem in our community.

• Not all areas of our community have access to health care services.
• Not all languages are spoken by the people who live in those areas, so they do not have access to those services either.
• People from low socioeconomic levels may not be able to afford transportation costs or other costs associated with traveling to get their medical treatment, so they don’t get any care at all!

Problem 4 – Lack of access to mental health services in our community.

The lack of access to mental health services in our community is a serious problem. People with mental illness or substance use disorders need help, but they cannot get it where they live.

The following are some of the reasons why we have this problem:

• Mental health services are needed, but not available in our community; and/or
• Mental health services are not accessible to our community; or
• Mental health services are not affordable for our community; or
• A combination of these reasons

Solution 1 – Promote a healthy living environment through education, prevention, and outreach programs.

• Education about the dangers of substance abuse, tobacco use and dangerous driving behaviors that are negatively affecting our community’s health status
• Promoting a safe and healthy lifestyle through public awareness campaigns targeting these issues in our community.

Solution 2 – Improve access to primary care providers, specialty care providers and necessary follow-up care for patients who are at risk for diabetes or high blood pressure/ cholesterol.
