Sadly, there have been more than 798 school shootings in America since 1999 according to Everytown for Gun Safety research and analysis which is significantly higher than any other year since that tragic event occurred at Columbine High School where 13 people died as well as 28 others were injured after two student gunmen opened fire in their Colorado high school killing 12 students and one teacher before taking their own lives. When we talk about school shootings, it is important to include all of these incidents in one category. This helps us understand the problem and how to solve it, as there are many different types of gun violence that can happen at schools.
For example, a mass shooting occurs when multiple people are killed or injured within seconds. A school shooting refers specifically to an act committed by one person with no apparent motive other than causing harm or death by using firearms inside a building where students were present (e.g., Columbine High School).
According to a report released by Everytown for Gun Safety, there were at least 798 reported incidents of gun violence in U.S. schools during the 2017-2018 school year. That’s an increase of 33% from 2016-2017 and 257% since 1999 (the highest number since 1999). The data shows that these shootings are not just limited to shootings in classrooms or hallways; they affect every part of our society, including our public spaces like malls or parks where children play sports games with their friends after school hours end earlier than usual due to safety concerns related to gun violence outside schools’ campuses
In the period between 1999 and 2018, schools have seen an average of one shooting per year. Most of these incidents did not result in any deaths but three students were killed and at least 17 more students were injured in shootings at schools across the country during that time period.

The association between gun violence at schools and violence outside them has been well documented: 93 percent of all mass shootings have occurred where there are no armed security guards present while over 90 percent occur where there are no metal detectors or other security measures protecting students from intruders entering buildings during breaks between classes (according to research conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University).
