Classification can be based on anything from race to species and everything in between. The most common form of classification used today is called taxonomy (a Greek word meaning order), which classifies things based on attributes like color or size while also taking into consideration other characteristics such as function or behavior.

Solids

A solid is a substance that has a definite shape, size and volume. The term solid also refers to its three dimensional structure, as opposed to liquid or gas. The melting point of a solid determines when it can be converted from one state into another by heating it up until it melts or turns into a liquid (when heated beyond its melting point). This can be done by placing the solid in an oven or simply applying heat through another means such as friction between two objects—for example if you were to rub your hands together repeatedly while holding onto something that contained ice cubes then those ice cubes would melt because they were heated up quickly enough for them not only become liquid but also lose their shape completely after being exposed long enough at room temperature conditions.”

Liquids

Liquids are substances that flow and take the shape of their containers. They have a definite volume, but no definite shape. Liquids can be divided into two categories: gases and liquids.

For example, water is a liquid because it flows freely when poured into its container (the glass). It also has a certain amount of weight per unit area; this means that if you pour 1/2 cup of water into another glass with 1/2 cup capacity, then after some time the total amount will be 2 cups (1 + 1). You cannot divide these two glasses equally because there isn’t enough space between them for an equal amount of liquid to fill each one completely before overflowing onto the sides or bottom surfaces due to gravity pulling down on top surfaces in order for them not fall over unexpectedly later when handled carelessly by someone else who may not know what they’re doing!

Gases

• A gas is a substance that does not have definite shape or volume, and therefore cannot be compressed.
• Gases are defined as the state of matter in which matter exists as a fluid under pressure.
• Gases are compressible substances, meaning that they can be squeezed together into smaller areas (like when you squeeze toothpaste).
• Gases also do not conduct heat well; they don’t conduct electricity well either. This means that gases aren’t good at conducting heat away from their source very easily, nor do they reflect light well at all!
