KEY TAKEAWAYS BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS ASSIGNMENT

topic 4: 4. Ethical and Legal Considerations Related to Dissociative Disorders Dissociative Disorders are often highly controversial and complex. They involve a disruption in consciousness, memory, identity, and/or perception, and can be difficult to diagnose, treat, and even understand. In this essay, I will be exploring the controversy surrounding dissociative disorders, explaining my professional beliefs about them with scholarly references, discussing strategies for maintaining the therapeutic relationship with a client that may present with
The controversy surrounding dissociative disorders has been the subject of much debate, both in the academic and clinical worlds. According to a study by Porter, Birt, Yuille, and Hervé (2001), dissociative disorders have been labeled as a form of mental illness by some clinicians, while others have argued that these disorders are the result of traumatic experiences. Those who argue for the validity of dissociative disorders point to the fact that these experiences are often accompanied by intense emotions, such as fear, anxiety, and confusion. On the other hand, those who oppose the validity of dissociative disorders believe that these experiences are simply the result of fantasy, and that they should not be classified as a form of mental illness. Porter et al. (2001) found that while there is still much research to be done in this area, the controversy surrounding dissociative disorders has had a significant impact on how clinicians diagnose and treat patients with these disorders. As such, the controversy surrounding dissociative disorders is likely to continue to be an important topic of discussion in the clinical and academic worlds.
Professional beliefs about dissociative disorders have been studied extensively in recent years. According to A Taves (2020), it is believed that dissociative disorders are caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors. This includes genetic predisposition, psychological trauma, and environmental stressors. Additionally, it is believed that dissociative disorders have a strong correlation to trauma, with many individuals experiencing traumatic events during their childhood or early adulthood. Further, it is thought that dissociative disorders are characterized by a disruption in identity, memory, or consciousness. This can manifest in a variety of ways, including amnesia, depersonalization, and depersonalization. In order to further understand dissociative disorders, current research is focusing on the neurobiological aspects of the disorder. It is believed that dissociative disorders are caused by neurochemical imbalances, which can lead to disruptions in the functioning of the brain. Additionally, it has been suggested that the disruption in identity, memory, and consciousness associated with dissociative disorders is due to a disruption of neuronal pathways in the brain. Finally, the latest evidence suggests that dissociative disorders are best treated with a combination of psychotherapy and medication. This includes cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and pharmacological interventions. By combining these approaches, it is possible to help individuals suffering from dissociative disorders manage their symptoms and lead more fulfilling lives.
There are a number of strategies for maintaining a therapeutic relationship with clients presenting with Dissociative Disorders (Cronin, Brand, & Mattanah, 2014). One important component of a successful therapeutic relationship is the client’s level of trust in the therapist. It is essential for the therapist to validate the client’s experiences, as well as provide a safe and non-judgmental environment in order to create a trusting relationship. Additionally, the therapist should be able to recognize the client’s dissociative symptoms and help them to manage the associated distress. This can be done by using techniques such as grounding, mindfulness, and relaxation exercises. It is also important to establish clear boundaries and expectations to ensure that the therapy is focused on the client’s needs. Finally, the therapist should be able to recognize when the client is struggling and provide resources and support to help them cope with the symptoms. By utilizing these strategies, a therapeutic relationship with a client presenting with Dissociative Disorders can be successful and beneficial to the client.
Overall, this assignment has presented an opportunity to explore the controversy surrounding dissociative disorders, the strategies for maintaining successful therapeutic relationships with these clients, as well as ethical and legal considerations for these diagnoses. Sadock, B. J., Sadock, V. A., & Ruiz, P. (2015). Kaplan & Sadock’s synopsis of psychiatry (11th ed.). Wolters Kluwer, Osmosis, Mad Medicine and Grande, T. (2018, October 22) provided valuable information additional information regarding dissociative disorders. To successfully complete the assignment, at least three supportive scholarly articles must be consulted in order to support any personal beliefs or opinions. Understanding the magnitude of the controversy, strategies to maintain a successful therapeutic relationship and the importance of the ethical and legal considerations help guide the mental health professional to practice with sensitivity, respect and thoughtfulness when working with a client struggling with a dissociative disorder.
