You will create 7 entries for your Reflective Journal about a patient encounter. In the 7th entry, you will review the previous 6 entries and evaluate your progress in reflective practice over the course of the term.  Each journal should be a minimum of 250 words.

The purpose of this reflective journal is self-reflection regarding the role in the process of self-reflection as a PMHNP provider. Through reflective practice, the student will evaluate their own emotional health and recognize one’s own feelings as well as one’s ability to monitor and manage those feelings. The point of the exercise is to learn yourself, your triggers, the types of cases you end up getting overly involved with, and those you’d rather refer to someone else. The idea is to be able to personally reflect on your behaviors/thoughts/decisions and how those impact you in the role of PMHNP.

There are a variety of advocacy groups that focus on different aspects of mental health, such as increasing awareness, providing support for those struggling with mental health issues, and advocating for better mental health policies. Thus, joining an advocacy group is a great way to not only get involved in the fight against mental health stigma, but also to help ensure that those struggling with mental health issues receive the support and resources that they need.
In their 2009 article, K Mann, J Gordon, and A MacLeod have discussed the importance of reflective practice when it comes to the advancement of health sciences education. Reflective practice is the process of reflecting on one’s own experiences and learning from them in order to improve their understanding and performance. By engaging in reflective practice, students can gain a better understanding of their learning process and how they can improve upon it. In this case, I have been engaging in reflective practice throughout the entire course by writing six journal entries, each of which has been a reflection of my learning process. By reviewing these entries, I can evaluate my progress in reflective practice and identify areas where I need to improve. For example, I have identified that I need to be more organized in my journal entries and make sure to include the key points of my learning process. Additionally, I need to work on my analysis of my learning process and pay more attention to details when writing my entries. These insights will help me to improve my reflective practice and ultimately lead to better learning outcomes.
After completing the seven reflective journal entries and reviewing the progress made throughout the term in reflective practice, it is clear that self-reflection is key to the role of the PMHNP. As the provider, it is important to recognize one’s own feelings and be able to monitor and manage those emotions effectively. For example, investigating a mental health issue such as LGBT mental health, becoming an active advocate of a specific advocacy group can be a powerful way to contribute to mental health awareness and promotion. In this way, not only can I help grow awareness for this issue, but I can also gain fulfillment from leading others. By participating in these activities and being an active advocate, I will build relationships and become a stronger provider. Ultimately, this will help me create a better support system for my patients and provide them with higher-quality services.
