Popes such as Julius II, Sixtus IV and Leo X were the most influential patrons of the period and funded a variety of artistic and architectural commissions. The Church also provided a source of power and legitimacy to the ruling classes and was used to strengthen the control of rulers over their people. This was especially true of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, where the Catholic Church was used to legitimize the establishment of colonial rule. In addition, Renaissance art was heavily influenced by religious themes, reflecting the importance of religion in the culture of the period. In summary, religion had a major impact on the patronage and power structures of the Renaissance, providing both moral justification and a source of power for rulers.
