KEY TAKEAWAYS BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS ASSIGNMENT

The development of literature has evolved over time, as new literary movements have emerged and gained influence. In this essay, I will analyze the development of Romanticism in literature, examine the impact of Naturalism on 19th century literature, and discuss the influence of Postmodernism on contemporary literature.
Romanticism has been a major theme in literature throughout history, and R Wellek’s 1949 article in JSTOR provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of Romanticism in literature. Wellek’s article examines the different forms of Romanticism, such as the idea of the supernatural and the idea of nature, as well as the impact of Romanticism on the literary works of the period. He also discusses how Romanticism has been used to create a sense of mystery and awe in readers, as well as how it has been used to explore the inner workings of the human mind. Wellek looks at the various authors who have embraced the Romantic style and how their works have been shaped by this movement. He also looks at how Romanticism has been used to challenge traditional ideas and to create new and innovative forms of literature. In conclusion, Wellek’s article provides an insightful analysis of the development of Romanticism in literature, examining how it has evolved over time and how it has impacted the works of many different authors.
Naturalism was an influential movement in 19th century literature, and its effects can be seen in many works from the period. According to F Freitag in Studies in American Naturalism, naturalism was a reaction against the romanticism of the previous era and was characterized by its focus on the environment and the individual’s place in it. It was rooted in the notion of determinism, which posited that an individual’s life and choices were heavily influenced by their environment and heredity. Naturalism was often dark and pessimistic, and its works often included themes of poverty, racism, and class conflict. It also often explored the idea of humans as driven by instinct and emotion, with no real control over their lives. Naturalism also favored a narrative style that was often more realistic and objective than the romanticism of the past. This style often focused on details and the environment over abstract ideas and emotions. Naturalism was an important part of the 19th century literary landscape, and its influence can still be seen in works from the period.
Postmodernism has had a profound effect on contemporary literature. According to DR Dickens (2002), postmodernism has allowed authors to create works of literature which possess the ability to challenge traditional conventions and norms. This has resulted in a wide range of literature which can be seen to possess a greater level of freedom and creativity than what had been seen in previous eras. Through the use of experimentalism, authors can now create works which contain multiple layers of meaning and complexity, without having to feel constrained by traditional rules and conventions. Furthermore, postmodernism has also been seen to have a significant impact on the way in which literature is consumed. By challenging established forms and techniques, authors have been able to create works which can be seen to be more accessible to wider audiences. This has increased the overall popularity of literature, and has allowed it to reach a much broader audience than what it previously had. As such, it is clear that postmodernism has had a significant impact on contemporary literature, and has allowed authors to create works which challenge traditional conventions, whilst also being more accessible to wider audiences.
In conclusion, literary movements have played a significant role in shaping and defining literature both historically, and in modern society. By studying literary movements, it’s possible to gain a greater understanding of how and why literature has developed, as well as how modern authors may draw their own influence from these movements. To understand the vast world of literature, it is important to research and understand the numerous historical and contemporary literary movements.
