DURING CLASS

During our class, we formed a group discussing the Tyre Nichols case. Each of us expressed how we felt about the issue, each trying to understand the other’s perspective, and in the discussion, a dilemma was formed as each one had their point of view of the situation. Then we discussed chapters 3, 6 and 17, where I learned much about utilitarianism, competence and conflict and American Indian Ethics. We looked at our next assignment.

COURSE OBJETIVE FOR THE CLASS

1. Identify the attributes of the mental health counseling profession as well as personal values and biases.

2. Examine the process of becoming a professional, becoming committed to a profession and contributing to its development as well as consider the current strains and strengths in the profession.

3. Develop an awareness of ethical assumptions and choices that are made and accepted each day of practice. 4. Identify and apply AMHCA and ACA Codes of Ethics.

5. Identify and apply systematic approaches for dealing with ethical dilemmas. Utilize several models in the ethical decision-making process; consider contextual factors such as culture, law, consequences, and priorities. 6. Identify laws regarding professional practice, malpractice and liability. 7. Present information, articulate several viewpoints and engage others in discussion about ethics in a non-judgmental and open-minded manner. 8. Identify and differentiate laws, codes of ethics, values, and personal beliefs. 9. Utilizing both interdependent and independent point of views and critical thinking

Introduction

Mental health counseling is a growing field and is a profession that can be challenging to break into. In this article, I will explain some of the stereotypes surrounding mental health counseling and how you can overcome them if you want to work in this field.

This misconception stems from the fact that mental health counselors are required to have a great deal of patience, which can be difficult for some people who lack patience or simply don’t understand it. Mental health counselors also need to work hard at all times, because they must treat each client with care, compassion and respect.

According to UPI News (2017), “a survey conducted by the American Counseling Association found that only about half of mental health professionals were satisfied with their jobs; another survey found that only 25 percent felt confident in their ability to help clients improve their lives through counseling.”

The public view of mental health counseling is that it’s a stereotypical white male profession.

Mental health counseling is a diverse profession. You can be male or female, white or non-white, gay or straight. What’s more important than your race? Your gender identity! You might be trans* or genderqueer*, questioning your sexual orientation and/or internalized homophobia at some point in your life. Mental health counselors are also people of different faiths and religions — Buddhist, Jewish and Muslim among others — but they also go beyond religion when working with clients who may have problems with drugs and alcohol abuse; domestic violence issues; eating disorders; self-injury (cutting); schizophrenia spectrum disorders including bipolar disorder 1&2

In actuality, mental health counselors tend to be more diverse than people think. They come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Mental health counselors are also diverse in terms of their personal values and biases (e.g., some hold strong religious beliefs while others do not).

In addition to these differences between mental health counselor professionals and the general population, there are other factors that make us unique as professionals:

• We have additional training requirements that allow us access to additional resources (e.g., specialized education) which can help us provide more effective services for our clients;
• We often work alongside other professionals who provide support such as social workers or psychologists;
• Finally, our clients may benefit from having a multidisciplinary team approach when working with them on their issues related to mental illness or substance abuse since this provides an opportunity for collaboration among different experts within one organization rather than just having one person doing everything by themselves

By understanding these kinds of situations better through research into psychological literature (e.g., clinical studies) where researchers have examined various types of bias within counseling treatment settings (Rogers & Kincaid; 2003), we can better tailor our interventions accordingly so that everyone feels more comfortable sharing personal information candidly without fear of judgmental attitudes coming from others around us–which ultimately leads back down stream towards improved outcomes overall!
