The nurse practitioner profession is one that requires a great amount of dedication and preparation. Through my program, I have been provided with the opportunity to prepare myself to meet the nine NONPF competencies. As Nilsson and Schale (2011) point out, being able to advocate for the profession is an important competency for any professional. This is something I have certainly been prepared for throughout my program. For example, I have had the opportunity to attend multiple workshops and seminars that have focused on how to effectively communicate and advocate for the profession in a variety of ways. One especially effective workshop focused on how to effectively use social media as a tool to advocate for the profession, teaching me how to effectively use Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms to reach out to potential clients and colleagues. I have also had the opportunity to work with a variety of community organizations and businesses that have allowed me to build strong relationships and advocate for the profession in a more direct way. Additionally, I was able to take a course that focused on the history of the profession and the key movements that have occurred to help us understand our current state. This course provided me with the knowledge and tools to be able to confidently and effectively advocate for the profession moving forward. All in all, my program has provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to effectively advocate for the profession.
The Program has taught me the importance of collaboration with colleagues. According to AL Suchman, PR Williamson, DK Litzelman, and others in their 2004 study published in Journal of General Internal Medicine, “collaboration between health care team members is essential to provide safe, effective, and high quality care.” By taking part in this program, I have learned to listen to my colleagues and consider their opinions, as well as share my own, in order to provide quality care. I have also been able to work with colleagues to develop and implement strategies to improve patient care. This program has also taught me to be inclusive of all team members, from physicians to nurses and other healthcare professionals, when developing a care plan. I have learned to recognize that everyone’s contributions are equally valuable and that the best outcomes can be achieved when everyone works together. Ultimately, this program has provided me with the skills and knowledge to collaborate with my colleagues in order to provide the best care for our patients.
The program I attended was immensely beneficial in preparing me for the professional world. Specifically, a study conducted by LB McCullough, G Geller and CH Braddock III (2015) highlights the positive effects the program had in terms of cultivating professionalism. According to the study, the program provided me with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel as a professional. Moreover, it also provided me with the opportunity to interact with industry experts and practitioners, which gave me a better understanding of the professional environment. Additionally, the program also helped me develop my communication and interpersonal skills, which are essential for a successful career. Furthermore, the program also instilled in me the importance of networking and professional development. This not only helped me acquire the necessary resources to succeed, but also provided me with the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with people in the industry. All in all, the program has been instrumental in preparing me for the professional world and I am grateful for having the opportunity to participate in it.
The NONPF competencies have provided me with a comprehensive, evidence-based individualized strategy to achieve my professional goals. The didactic, experiential and reflection components within the program have given me the essential skills and knowledge to confidently understand and apply my knowledge in the field of NP practice. My development as a practitioner, advanced nurse, leader and clinician has been enhanced and refined through the various experiences and clinical activities within the course. As a result of the NONPF program, I now have an understanding of the research-based methods to provide holistic and safe care, along with developing best practice protocols and protocols to assess, diagnose, and treat clients in a manner that meets the highest standards of healthcare. The program has also enhanced my ability to collaborate and effectively lead within the NP specialty field. By achieving the competencies requirements for the NONPF program, I have the necessary skillset to become a successful and competent nurse practitioner.
