Diseases and disorders come in all shapes and sizes, from common ones like diabetes (which affects more than 30 million Americans) or heart disease (1) to rarer ones like neuroblastoma (a cancer that develops in children). As you’ll see below, these illnesses can have varying degrees of severity based on their impact on your body’s ability to function normally—but they’re still pretty scary!

The signs and symptoms of childhood leukemia vary widely. Some children may have no or few symptoms at all, while others may experience sudden changes in their health that signal the presence of leukemia.

The most common types of childhood leukemia include acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), hairy cell leukemia (HCL) and acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). These abnormal cells spread throughout your body through the circulatory system to other organs such as your liver, skin (dermatofibrosis), brain (encephalitides) or kidneys (nephrotic syndrome).
