Flywheel and Doom Loop

From businesses and organizations to institutions and government agencies, the Flywheel principle and the Doom Loop provide contrasting approaches to achieving success. In this essay, I will analyze the impact of leadership, examine the role of structure and processes, and explore the interplay of communication, culture, and accountability in organizations utilizing the Flywheel principle and those in the Doom Loop. By comparing two observed organizations, I will gain insight into what caused the difference between the two.

Leadership is an essential factor in organizational success, and the Flywheel Principle and the Doom Loop are two models that analyze the impact of leadership on organizations. J Collins (2009) found that the Flywheel Principle, which emphasizes the importance of small, steady improvements, is more successful than the Doom Loop, which focuses on large, rapid changes. Specifically, Collins suggested that the Flywheel Principle can help organizations achieve sustainable gains and long-term success, while the Doom Loop can often create short-term wins that are unsustainable in the long run. He further noted that the Flywheel Principle works best when leaders focus on incremental improvements, rather than drastic changes, and that the Doom Loop is more likely to be successful when leaders can bring about dramatic change quickly.
