Psychotherapy with Multiple Modalities Practicum

Introduction

This practicum is designed to give students an opportunity to experience psychotherapy with multiple modalities. It is not intended to be a substitute for the LPCC, but rather a complement to it. The practicum is geared toward students who have completed the LPCC and wish to either specialize in a particular modality or work as a generalist in several modalities.

Psychotherapy with Multiple Modalities Practicum

The practicum is a practice-based clinical observation and assessment of the student’s ability to work with clients in a variety of settings. Part of this experience is working with patients at various stages in their therapeutic treatment, including pre-treatment, treatment planning, initial sessions and follow-up.

The purpose of the practicum is to give students an opportunity to apply what they have learned during their coursework at UBC. Students who complete this course will receive unit credit towards their program requirements as well as professional development hours toward completion of BC Psychotherapy Association certification requirements.*

Students who are eligible include current students registering for courses through the Department’s online registration system (eAcademy). This includes both undergraduate and graduate students; however please note that only one student may participate per session unless specifically allowed by faculty members involved in supervising your work

This practicum will include: working with clients who are experiencing difficulties related to their lives and relationships; learning about how various types of therapy can help people deal with those difficulties; practicing techniques that you will learn throughout your coursework (e.g., mindfulness, experiential exercises); developing your own style when working with clients (e.g., self-monitoring).

Course Objectives

The course objectives are to:

• explore the role of psychotherapy in patients’ lives, and understand how it works.
• understand how human beings are influenced by their past experiences and present circumstances.

Psychotherapy is a relationship between a therapist and a client. The client’s symptoms, or problems, are the result of their past experiences and present circumstances. The goal of psychotherapy is to help the patient understand their past experiences and present circumstances so that they can make changes in their lives that will improve their mental health.

2) To get practical experience working with clients presenting with various psychopathologies and problems through the use of individual, couples and family therapy.

The need to work with a variety of clients is essential for this type of practicum, as it allows you to gain an understanding of how people think and behave in different situations. You will have the opportunity to work with individuals who are experiencing difficulties at home or work, but also families who are having trouble communicating effectively; this can be challenging at times but can also be incredibly rewarding!

In order to succeed in this field you must be able to adapt your approach depending on what kind of client you’re working with: some may require more one-on-one time than others; others may need more structured guidance from someone else (such as your supervisor); still others might benefit from being able talk through their feelings over lunch together each week – there really isn’t any right answer here except maybe all three!

3) To develop skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients during therapy sessions and then integrate this communication into daily activities outside of therapy.

In order to help you develop your communication skills, I will introduce you to some different types of people. You may be surprised by what you see and learn about yourself!

• The first person is me, the therapist. I am always here for questions and concerns about anything related to therapy or life in general.
• The second person is a client who has come into the office for an appointment with me (or one of my colleagues). They are usually seeking some sort of healing process or treatment for their problems like depression or anxiety disorders; however, sometimes it’s just because they’re having trouble coping with everyday challenges like relationships at work/school/home etc…

Students will learn how to apply their knowledge gained from their general education classes directly into working with clients in a therapeutic setting.
