What are  Post partum blue and Post partum Depression? Causes of Post Partum depression: incidents of post partum depression in parents

Introduction

PPD is a common condition that affects women after the birth of their baby. It can occur any time within the first six months postpartum, but it most often occurs after the first month.

Postpartum blues

Postpartum blues is a common occurrence that usually happens in the first few days after delivery. It is not uncommon for women to feel sad, anxious, or irritable after giving birth.

You may notice that you have these symptoms:

• Depression (feeling sad)
• Fatigue (having little energy)
• Increase in appetite and weight gain

Symptoms of PPD

Post partum depression can be a serious condition. Symptoms of postpartum depression include:

• Depression
• Anxiety
• Feelings of sadness, guilt and worthlessness.

Postpartum depression affects 1 in 10 new mothers, which is why it’s important to know the signs and symptoms so you can seek help if needed.

Causes of PPD

The causes of postpartum depression are complex, but they include hormonal changes after birth, a history of depression or anxiety, and previous miscarriages or stillbirths.

While there is no single cause for PPD, research has shown that it can be triggered by certain events in your life:

• Hormonal Changes After Birth: The hormone estrogen levels rise after giving birth and may lead to feelings of sadness, irritability and fatigue. This may increase the risk of developing postpartum blues if you’ve experienced them before becoming pregnant (or if you were experiencing them before).
• Previous Depression/Anxiety: People with a history of depression or anxiety tend to have an increased risk for developing PPD as well because these disorders often co-occur with each other–so one person may experience both at once! If you’re worried about this happening too (or even just want some extra support), talk to someone who knows what they’re talking about!
• Miscarriage/Stillbirth History: Women who have had miscarriages or stillbirths have been found more likely than others towards having symptoms similar those seen within PPD later on down the road–though only slightly so far….

Treatment for PPD

There are many treatment options available to treat postpartum depression. The most common and effective treatment is medication, which usually lasts for six months or longer. If you’re not feeling well enough to take medication, then talk with your doctor about getting some help from a therapist or support group instead.

• Medication: Antidepressants like venlafaxine (Effexor) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil) or sertraline (Zoloft) can be prescribed by your doctor if they’re shown to be effective in treating PPD symptoms in women who have never given birth before. These medications typically come with side effects though so it’s important that you talk about these risks when deciding whether or not they’ll work for you personally–but remember that the benefits far outweigh them!
