Option 1: McCarthyism and Anti-Communist CampaignsThe Cold War brought about an irrational fear of communism and communist activities in the United States. As we are learning this week, one of the most vocal instigators of this paranoia was Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy delivered a speech about the imminent threat of communism on February 9, 1950. Perform a search on the internet and locate and read Joseph McCarthy’s speech given in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 9, 1950. Copy and paste the following keywords into your Google search bar: “Joseph McCarthy, Wheeling, West Virginia.” The speech is also referred to as “Enemies from Within.”

Construct the case study by responding to the following prompts:

· Explain how Senator Joseph McCarthy defined communist nations within the speech. What specific threats did these nations pose?

· Assess if Senator Joseph McCarthy charges were accurate.

· Analyze anti-communist sentiments during the Cold War era, were these sentiments valid. If so, how? If not, why not?

· Explain if there are other examples of events similar to the Red Scare that have occurred throughout history and modern day.

· Examine what happened to people who invoked the Fifth Amendment, refused to appear or were found in violation of the law as defined by the Congressional Committee.

Option 2: The Civil Rights MovementUsing the Internet, locate and read Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech given in Washington D.C., August 1963. Copy and paste the following keywords into your Google search bar: “I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr.” Feel free also to locate and incorporate additional scholarly sources to respond to this case study, including information on the Civil Rights Movement.

Construct the case study by responding to the following prompts:

· Explain if the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s effectively changed the nation.

· What effect would the Civil Rights Acts have across the continent on minority groups?

· Do you think that the tactics and strategies that civil rights activists used in the 1960s would apply to today’s racial and ethnic conflicts? Why or why not?

· Do the ideas of the 1960s still have relevance today? If so how? If not, why not?

· Analyze how the Civil Rights Movement would impact diversity in America today.

KEY TAKEAWAYS BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS ASSIGNMENT

The Cold War was a period characterized by intense political and ideological tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. During this time, anti-communist sentiments were extremely prevalent, and have had a lasting impact on the world today. In this essay, I will be analyzing the validity of anti-communist sentiments during the Cold War era by examining the economic impact, analyzing the role of propaganda in shaping these sentiments, and investigating the long-term effects.
The Cold War was an era of intense ideological tension between the West and the East, with the Soviet Union and its allies on one side and the United States and its allies on the other. During this period, anti-Communist sentiments were strong in the West and had a significant economic impact on East European countries. According to H Appel in his paper, “East European Politics and Societies” (2005), this ideological divide had a significant effect on both economic policies and the economic development in East European countries. He notes that economic policies of East European countries during the Cold War were influenced by the ideological divide and the anti-Communist sentiment in the West. This had a major effect on the economic development of East European countries, as they were unable to receive investments from the West and had to rely heavily on the Soviet Union for economic aid. In addition, the anti-Communist sentiment in the West had a significant impact on the political systems of East European countries, creating a climate of fear and mistrust. This further hindered their economic development and made it difficult for them to engage in meaningful economic cooperation with the West. Thus, it can be concluded that the anti-Communist sentiments of the West during the Cold War had a profound and pervasive effect on the economic development of East European countries.
The role of propaganda in shaping anti-communist sentiment during the Cold War is a topic that has been researched and analyzed extensively in the past. According to G Barnhisel and C Turner (2010), the use of propaganda during the Cold War was pervasive and its effects were far-reaching. It was used by the United States and other Western powers to promote the idea of American superiority, while at the same time demonizing the Soviet Union and its allies. Propaganda was used to create fear and uncertainty among the public, which made them more willing to accept the US government’s anti-communist policies. The use of propaganda also helped to create an atmosphere of suspicion and paranoia, which further fueled anti-communist sentiment. Moreover, propaganda was used to justify the US interventions in foreign countries, such as Vietnam, as well as to discredit the actions of the Soviet Union and its allies. All of these factors combined to create a powerful anti-communist sentiment that was entrenched in the public consciousness for decades. In this way, propaganda played an important role in shaping anti-communist sentiment during the Cold War.
During the Cold War, anti-communist sentiment ran rampant in western countries. According to J Michaels in 2017, the long-term effects of this sentiment are still being felt today. During the Cold War, the U.S. government actively pursued policies to combat the spread of communism, including the McCarthy hearings and the Korean War. These policies resulted in a number of consequences, including a widespread fear of communism and a distrust of foreign governments. The long-term effects of this anti-communist sentiment were not limited to the U.S. Many other countries, including countries in Europe and the Middle East, experienced similar sentiments during the Cold War. This distrust of foreign governments has continued to this day, and has led to an increase in xenophobia and nationalism. Additionally, the fear of communism has led to a distrust of socialist policies, even though many of these policies are beneficial to the public. The long-term effects of anti-communist sentiment during the Cold War have been far-reaching, and have had a profound impact on foreign relations and public opinion.
Overall, anti-communist sentiments during the Cold War era were largely justified, as the Cold War marked a period of international tension and fear of a nuclear attack. The American government was justified in taking a hard line against Soviet communism, as the threat of a communist takeover presented severe consequences both economically and politically. This sentiment was felt among the people of the United States, who were willing to take whatever measures were necessary to prevent the spread of Soviet-inspired communism. While some of the hard-line tactics employed by the US were excessive, there was a legitimate belief that Soviet communism posed a real and imminent threat.
