You’ve made it through the first part of your job interview, and now it’s time for your interviewer to ask you some questions. They probably won’t be asking you about yourself, but that doesn’t mean this is the end of their questioning. In fact, there are few things worse than an interviewer who seems like they want to jump right into talking about their own lives instead of yours–and one way to ensure that doesn’t happen is by setting up some ground rules before their next question comes along:

This is a reasonable question to ask, but it doesn’t mean that your interviewer will ask you to tell them all about yourself. Your best bet is to prepare for this question by thinking about what you want to say (and practicing saying it out loud), writing down a few points on paper or in an interview guide, and even practicing answering the question in front of a mirror before going into an interview.
If someone asks you what you do, then respond with “Tell me about yourself.” This is a great way to keep the conversation flowing and not get stuck on one particular topic.
If they ask you what you do, then say that you do it well. They may be wondering why they should hire someone with no experience (or perhaps even less than desirable experience). You can answer this by saying that your skills are transferable to other industries or companies. For example:
You can also reply with “I’d like to learn more about the job and why you’re looking for someone like me.” This is an effective way of opening the interview because it shows that you are interested in learning more about the company, job, and interviewer. It also shows that you are willing to ask questions during an interview.
A non-question question can be useful if used appropriately, but it’s not always what you want or expect. If the interviewer asks this question and your response is “Tell me about yourself,” then there’s no need to answer at all–you just let the natural flow of conversation take over from there.
Some people get nervous when they hear this type of question in an interview because they think it implies that they should go into detail about their life story on the spot (which may not be necessary). However, asking someone who has been out of work for several months after receiving a job offer whether or not they have been actively searching for work demonstrates interest in their potential as an employee rather than making assumptions about their skillset at this point in time.
