The theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to “mentalize” or think about how other people are thinking and feeling. This includes being able to guess what someone else wants, imagine how an event might affect them and understand their point of view. Theories of mind can be understood as a classic developmental process that develops through interactions with others who share your culture and experience, as well as through exposure to books, TV shows and games where characters have minds similar to yours (also known as immersive learning).
Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to attribute mental states—beliefs, intents, desires, pretending and knowledge—to oneself and others. It also requires understanding that others have beliefs, desires and intentions that are different from one’s own.
Theory of mind also includes being able to predict what someone else will do in a given situation based on their past behaviour or intentions. For example: I know if you have never visited our store before you won’t be able to find your way around easily so I will guide you around on this occasion!
Theory of mind is assessed by a variety of measures, including false belief tasks and theory of mind tasks. False belief tasks involve children making predictions about the behavior of others based on their knowledge of their beliefs. Theory of mind tasks require children to infer the beliefs, desires and intentions of others.
For example, one popular method for assessing theory-of-mind abilities involves asking infants aged 3–6 months old to look at a picture and point out whether an adult has a specific object in hand (e.g., “Is he holding a ball?”). If they say yes then they receive praise; if not then they receive negative feedback such as being told “No!”
There is no single theory of mind. Instead, it is a continuum that spans from infants’ ability to infer what others are thinking and feeling through simple reasoning, to their ability for more complex forms of theory-of-mind such as false belief understanding, mentalizing and intentionality understanding (Alderman & Medin, 1989).
