The rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people are a growing concern in society today. Although the reasons why young people have the highest infection rate for STIs are complex and can vary depending on individual situations, these themes generally arise: a lack of education on the risk and consequences of unsafe sexual behaviour; a lack of access to health services; limited awareness of available resources; and social stigma. In order to increase prevention, education programs and public health campaigns that are age-appropriate and delivered how young people prefer (e.g. online, social media) should be developed and made more widely available. Furthermore, initiatives to reduce stigma associated with STIs should be implemented that increase awareness of accessible services and promote the importance of regular testing and early treatment. All of these measures have the potential to decrease infection rates among this age group exponentially.
