Anna Chapman

Anna Chapman is a Russian spy who was arrested in New York City in 2010. She worked for the Russian foreign intelligence service, SVR.

Chapman and nine other sleeper agents were exposed as part of an operation called “Illegals Program” by the United States Department of Justice and FBI. They were accused of being members of a ring led by Anna Chapman’s husband Igor Sushchin that targeted US government officials at the UN headquarters in New York City and elsewhere around the world while they were having drinks with friends or family members who had access to classified information about US military operations overseas during peacekeeping missions (e.g., Kosovo).

Igor Sutyagin

Igor Sutyagin was a Russian nuclear weapons researcher who was convicted of espionage in 2004. He had worked on designing a nuclear reactor for the Soviet Union and later transferred his knowledge to the United States. After he left Russia, he was arrested by British authorities at Heathrow Airport in London on March 10, 2007. He served six years in prison before being released under house arrest as part of an agreement between both countries’ governments and law enforcement agencies regarding Sutyagin’s case.[1]

Robert Philip Hanssen

Robert Philip Hanssen was born on April 18, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. He is a former FBI agent who worked as an intelligence analyst for the Bureau for 20 years before turning traitor and spying for Soviet Russia from 1979 to 2001.

Hanssen was caught when he was arrested by the FBI in 2001 after being identified as a mole working with Russian intelligence services. He pleaded guilty and received life imprisonment at his sentencing hearing in 2002; however, he is currently serving time at Lompoc prison while awaiting execution by lethal injection.[1]

Aldrich Ames

Aldrich Hazen Ames was a CIA officer who spied for the Soviet Union and Russia. He was convicted of espionage and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He was recruited by the KGB in 1985, who saw him as an ideal candidate for espionage because he had access to highly sensitive information about US nuclear programs. The FBI arrested Ames on June 3, 1994 after they found out that he had been selling classified documents from his office at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia (a suburb north of Washington DC).

Ronald Pelton

Ronald Pelton was a former senior analyst for the National Security Agency (NSA) who worked for the Soviet Union from 1979 to 1985. He was convicted of espionage and sentenced to three concurrent life terms in 1986.

Victor Mosely/Kim Jong-Il regime loyalist

Victor Mosely was an American citizen who was born in the former Soviet Union. He became a double agent for the United States and North Korea, working to advance both sides’ agendas. His activities were instrumental in obtaining critical intelligence about weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs at Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center, which enabled Washington to develop its policy of “strategic patience” toward Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.

He was captured in July 2002, held at Guantanamo Bay prison until June 2007, when the United States accepted his plea bargain on March 2, 2008 and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In exchange for providing vital information on terrorism networks and locations, he was given a plea bargain which would reduce his sentence by three years. He was released in January 2014 under supervised release; as part of his probation he must wear an electronic ankle monitor every day for life
