I n t r o d u c t i o n

The medical profession has a muddled and contradictory association with its approach toward the tobacco industry. While the profession now firmly opposes to smoking and vigorously publicizes the serious, even fatal, health hazards associated with smoking, this was not always so. Advertisements for tobacco products, including cigarettes “… became a ready source of income for numerous medical organizations and journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), as well as many branches and bulletins of local medical associations” (Wolinsky & Brune, 1994). Physicians and reference to doctors and smoking were once common in tobacco industry advertisements. The story of physicians and promotion of smoking can be found in “The Doctors’ Choice Is America’s Choice” (Gardner & Brandt, 2006).

The role of physicians in the current opioid crisis is now under scrutiny on television (Farmer, 2019) by trade publications (King, 2018), peer-reviewed journals (deShazo, et al, 2018), and by physicians themselves (Hirsch, 2019).

Furthermore, traditional education offers more face-to-face interaction, allowing students to collaborate and engage in meaningful discussion with their peers, whereas online education often relies more heavily on written communication and is less personal. Additionally, traditional education has a greater focus on lectures and exams, while online education typically offers more opportunities to engage in hands-on projects. Ultimately, the decision between traditional and online education relies on the individual needs and preferences of the student, as each offers its own set of advantages and drawbacks.
The efficiency of traditional and digital note-taking methods has been studied extensively over the last few decades. Research conducted by J Pearson, G Buchanan, H Thimbleby and others (2012) suggests that digital methods can be significantly more efficient than traditional methods when it comes to note-taking. The study found that digital note-takers can record more information in a given amount of time and are able to focus more on the content of the lecture than their traditional counterparts. In addition, digital resources are more cost-effective and can be used by large numbers of students simultaneously. On the other hand, Engbrecht explains that textbooks can be more durable and reliable, and can provide more detailed information. Textbooks can also be used offline, while digital resources often require internet access. In conclusion, Engbrecht argues that each type of resource has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, and educators should use a combination of the two to meet their students’ needs.
