How does media create meanings about gender?

A) How does media create meanings about gender?

B) Provide examples of how this is manifested in our everyday lives.

C) Provide a link to a commercial/ad that stereotypes gender. Even though it is natural to find humor in some of these portrayals, in what ways is this problematic.

Also, consider that sex is a system of classification based on biology and physiology, while gender reflects the cultural meaning that is ascribed to a persons sex, thus resulting in labels of masculinity and femininity. Furthermore, our biology is not distinctively male or female and a significant number of people are born intersex with variations in chromosomes or sexual organs. Most biological researchers agree on the estimation that intersex people are about as common as encountering someone with green eyes.

It is important to understand that masculinity and femininity are not oppositional, although it seems to be portrayed so in media. In Western society (such as in the U.S. and Western Europe) we typically adhere to certain ideas and values that define masculinity and femininity as we perform the roles. What if the list was different? All of us, in honesty, could reveal that we interchange among the qualities. Take a look at the list and answer the following questions:

  • strength
  • dominance
  • aggression
  • independence
  • empowerment
  • active
  • rational thought
  • production
  • breadwinner
  • subject
  • outdoors
  • technology
  • weakness
  • submission
  • compliance/vulnerability
  • dependence
  • disempowerment
  • passive
  • emotion
  • consumption
  • nurturer
  • object
  • indoors
  • nature

Provide answers to the following questions or prompts in your assignment submission.

D) How is the list being currently challenged?

E) What traits do you have that are typically considered on the list of the other sex?

F) What examples do you see in your daily life of people challenging the historic list?

G) What about examples in media of characters or people challenging the list?

H) Finally, do you agree or disagree that gender is socially constructed? Provide evidence that backs your opinion.

How does media create meanings about gender

Media plays an important role in shaping our understanding of gender. All forms of media, from television and film to social media and advertising, are constantly creating and reinforcing meanings about gender roles, identities, and expectations. In this essay, I will explore how media influences gender norms, the representation of gender in television and film, and gender bias in advertising and marketing.
The influence of social media on gender norms has been widely studied. According to FJ Rondán-Cataluña et al. (2017), social media has had a considerable impact on gender norms, particularly in how they are represented and perpetuated. In their study, they note that gender roles are often reinforced through social media, as certain social media platforms are often used to portray traditional gender roles. Furthermore, these platforms can be used to challenge traditional gender norms by offering a platform for those with different gender perspectives to express themselves. Additionally, the way in which gender is presented on social media can influence how people perceive gender, as images and videos can be used to spread particular messages about gender. For example, a simple image can be used to promote gender equality or to reinforce gender stereotypes. Such messages can have a profound effect on the way gender is perceived and understood by society. Ultimately, social media has become a powerful tool for both reinforcing and challenging traditional gender norms. It provides individuals with a platform to share their own perspectives and ideas about gender, allowing them to challenge the status quo and influence the way gender is understood in society.
Gender representation in television and film has changed significantly over the past few decades. However, the overall representation still remains unequal and problematic (Reitz, 2017). According to N Reitz (2017), gender representation in television and film has been characterized by a lack of female characters and by an over-sexualization of female characters. This has resulted in a limited view of what it means to be a woman and has contributed to the perpetuation of gender stereotypes. In addition, Reitz (2017) points out that media often represent women in a way that reinforces traditional gender roles, such as the “damsel in distress” or the “mother figure”, which can have a negative impact on how women are viewed in society. Furthermore, women are often relegated to supporting roles while men take the lead or are portrayed as the “hero”. This lack of balanced representation can lead to an environment in which gender inequality is accepted as the norm. Overall, these limited and problematic representations of gender in television and film can have a lasting and damaging effect on how gender is viewed in society.
In 2003, LD Wolin published an article in the Journal of Advertising Research which highlighted the prevalence of gender bias in advertising and marketing. Wolin argued that “gender bias in advertising and marketing is an important issue that needs to be addressed” (Wolin, 2003). From the perspective of advertisers, Wolin contended that gender bias can be seen as a way to “target specific markets” (Wolin, 2003). This idea can be seen in the way that advertisers often use gender stereotypes to appeal to particular demographics. For example, children’s toys are often marketed towards a particular gender, creating a divide between “boys’ toys” and “girls’ toys”. This type of gender-based marketing reinforces sexism and can lead to the belief that certain activities and occupations are only suitable for one gender. Wolin also argued that gender bias in advertising and marketing can have a negative impact on individuals’ self-esteem and can create a sense of “otherness” in certain groups of people (Wolin, 2003). It is clear that gender bias in advertising and marketing is an important issue that needs to be addressed in order to create a society that is free from discrimination.
To conclude, media has an immense power to shape our views of the world around us, particularly when it comes to defining and constructing gender roles. We can see this both in terms of media’s power to promote, reinforce and challenge outdated gender stereotypes and expectations, as well as the broader messages surrounding gender that are being conveyed by the media. As such, it is important for individuals to actively engage with media, critically assess its messages about gender, and be mindful about its potential impacts on their own and other people’s lives.
