In 1997, ND Ernst, EVA Obarzanek, MB Clark and others conducted an experiment which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, to examine the health risks related to obesity in America. The results of the experiment suggested that obesity is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, gallbladder disease, stroke, sleep apnea and certain types of cancer, such as endometrial, breast, and colon cancer. It showed that obese individuals are more likely to develop these diseases compared to those of normal weight. Furthermore, the study concluded that obesity is also associated with a decrease in life expectancy, decreased quality of life, and increased medical costs. This research demonstrates that obesity can have serious and long-term effects on individuals and it is essential for people to take steps to maintain a healthy and balanced diet to reduce their risk of obesity and its associated health risks.
Obesity is a growing problem in the United States, with staggering rates of adults and children affected by the epidemic. According to Barnhill, Palmer, Weston, and other authors in their 2018 study, the most effective solutions to combat obesity are those that focus on “policy and environmental changes that create healthy food and beverage options, increase access to safe physical activity, and reduce sedentary behaviors” (Barnhill et al., 2018). By creating and enforcing changes to our food and beverage industry, increasing physical activity opportunities, and reducing sedentary behaviors, we can work to address the root causes of obesity. For example, policy changes could include restrictions on marketing unhealthy food to children and increasing the cost of unhealthy food. Changes in the environment could include adding sidewalks and bike paths to increase physical activity opportunities and decreasing the availability of unhealthy snacks in vending machines. Reducing sedentary behaviors could be achieved by encouraging people to take more breaks from screens and increasing access to parks and recreational centers.
