The article, “More Than a Checkbox: Engaging Youth in Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in Canada,” by Cox, Hill, Plush, Heykoop and Tremblay (2019), is an important contribution to the field of youth-friendly disaster risk reduction. This paper aims to explore what it means for youth to be engaged when it comes to DRR/RRR activities and how this can be accomplished through education.
The authors note that there are many reasons why youth need help engaging with DRR/RRR initiatives; however they believe that this process may be easier if we think about how young people learn best: through storytelling! The literature review was conducted to identify the best practices for engaging youth in disaster risk reduction and resilience in Canada. A total of five studies were included in this review, four of which focused on specific geographical locations (i.e., British Columbia) while one study was limited to a national sample size (n=1,000). The findings of these five studies suggest that there are significant differences between local communities’ approaches to engaging youth in disaster risk reduction and resilience compared with those at the national level; however, there is still room for improvement across all areas studied.
The majority of researchers who participated in this study agreed that an effective strategy would be one where educators use multiple methods including classroom instruction, field trips/exposures and mentorship programs as well as social media platforms such as Facebook groups or Twitter feeds where users can post questions anonymously if they’re unable reach out directly through email communication channels due access constraints.”
