Part II – Classical Conditioning
Try this simple experiment on Pavlovian or classical conditioning after reading about Pavlovian conditioning in Chapter 3 of your book.
You will need a bell (a set of keys works too :-), a hand held mirror, and a room that becomes completely dark when the light is turned off. Hold the bell while standing in the room near the light switch. Once in position, ring the bell and then immediately turn off the light. Wait in total darkness for 15 seconds, then turn the light on. Wait another 15 seconds with the light on then ring the bell and immediately turn the light off again, waiting another 15 seconds in the dark.
Repeat this procedure 20 to 30 times making sure that in each case the bell is rung immediately before the light is turned off. Now, with the light on, watch your eyes closely in the mirror and then ring the bell. Your pupils should dilate slightly even without a change in light!

Behavior Modification Project
Principles of operant conditioning can be applied to behavior modification. For your final project you will be developing and implementing your own behavior modification project. First you will need to choose a behavior (your own, your pet’s, etc.) that you would like to change. Next you will design, institute, and evaluate your behavior modification program. You should identify the target behavior and how you intend to change it during week 1. Then in week 2 you will submit your behavior modification plan for instructor feedback. For week 3 you will implement your plan. And then in week 4 you will report the outcome or progress of your plan as well as evaluate the strategy you have put in to place.
This project will be graded on how well you used behavior modification techniques (including use of appropriate terminology) and the completeness/thoroughness of your plan. It will not be graded on how successful you are in changing the behavior. Use of technical terminology as used in the textbook and research is expected in the project report.

Week 2: Behavior Modification Project – Part II
Based on feedback from week 1 in a 2-3 page paper discuss the triggers or antecedents that set off the current behavior (in the above example – boredom, stress). Describe the current baseline levels of the behavior (1 pack a day) that will be used to measure the outcome of the behavior modification plan. Next discuss the desired behavior or outcome you wish to achieve. Finally in detail discuss the strategy that you plan to employ to modify this behavior ensuring that it is based on operant conditioning principles and techniques. Make sure to include the reinforcers you will apply when milestones are reached and the punishment that will take place when you or your subject stray from the plan.
Week 3 – Behavior Modification Project – Part III
Put plan into action making sure to collect data on progress.
Week 4 – Behavior Modification Project – Part IV
This week you will submit an evaluation of the effectiveness of your behavior modification program. Your evaluation should be written in a 4-6 page paper (including your graph or chart) that contains the following:
Functional analysis of the target behavior to explain the purpose or motive of the original behavior by discussing the following:
Define the behavior in the context that the behavior is used
The antecedent or trigger related to the behavior
The consequences of the behavior that help to maintain this behavior
A graph that indicates the baseline behavior during the first data collection phase as well as the data collected during the treatment phase and an overall assessment of level of success of your program (of if your program is still in progress you should report the changes that have been made up until this point)
A discussion of the effectiveness of your modification plan, techniques that were used, and method of data recording and analysis that you used
A discussion of what changes you might make to your behavior modification program if you were to continue to attempt to change this behavior
