Next, determine a possible element ortopic you wish to focus on. For example,do you wish to focus on style, tone and/ or language? Point of view? Symbolism? Characters?Setting? Themes?Plot? You can pick one element and focus the entire essay on just thatone element, such as, setting, or you may use more than one element; forinstance, setting and symbolism and discuss how setting and symbolism influencesthe story. To explain more, if you wish to have your entire essay focus on themessuch as, gender roles, womens rights, change, identity, etc, you may do soas long as the readings used are relatable to those themes. Alternatively, ifyou wish to focus on two different elements such as characters and settings,you may do so, too, as long as the stories used focus on how characters andsetting influences the text. The point is to choose a focus and let it beCLEAR! (More details on theseelements can be found in the textbook in the chapter entitled, Reading andWriting about Fiction. In addition toclass discussions, I strongly suggest you read on the various elements offiction to get more understanding and guidance.)
Be sure to decide on a debatable, clear and concise thesisstatement.
Along with citing from thetextbook, you are encouraged to use literary criticism and, of course, citethose sources, too, in MLA format.
Note: Do not be afraid to develop unusual or creative interpretations. A safe reading of a work is likely toresult in a dull essay that simply state the obvious, but an aggressive or strong reading of a work–one thatchallenges generally held assumptions–can lead to interesting andintellectually challenging conclusions. Even if your reading differs fromestablished critics interpretations, you should not automatically assume yourinterpretation has no merit. Your own special knowledge of the materialdiscussed in the texta regional practice, an ethic custom and personalexperience–may give you a unique perspective from which to view the work. Whatever interpretation you make, be sure that you support itwith specific references to the text. If your interpretation is based onyour own experiences, explain those experiences and relate them clearly to thework you are discussing. As long as you can make a reasonable case, you havethe right (and perhaps the obligation) to present your ideas.
Keep in mind that some interpretations arenot reasonable. You may contribute ideas based on your perspectives, but youcannot ignore or contradict evidence in the text to suit your own biases.
