Getting Started
The idea of God is not extremely difficult for a person to grasp. In some ways God can be conceived simply as a human with extraordinary abilities and powers. He is like us but bigger. This similarity however is deceptive because in reality the roles are entirely reversed. In reality, the qualities of personhood, the ability to choose, the ability to reason, free choice do not belong to us as humans; rather they are reflective qualities. It means our abilities do not derive from ourselves they Gods gift to us as human beings.
Imagine, if you will, a little four-year-old child taking a trip with you to the Louvre in Paris. There the child sees the exquisite painting of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. You enjoy the museum and then return home. Once home your child gets out a piece of paper and draws a woman sitting as well as any four-year-old child can. Is the Mona Lisa merely a bigger, larger version of the four-year-olds drawing? Hardly! The Mona Lisa is not simply a larger, better version of the childs art. Rather the Mona Lisa has qualities that the childs drawing lacks. The Mona Lisa is not quantitatively better, meaning it simply has more lines or longer lines, it is qualitatively better, which means it has qualities that the childs version lacks.
Anything that the childs version of the Mona Lisa has which are similar to the art is a reflection of the real painting. The child is approximating the real masterpiece not really reduplicating it. One could imagine an artist picking up the childs version of the Mona Lisa, and saying, The Mona Lisa looks like this. The issue is, however, it only shares some of the qualities, a woman seated.
In the same way, God is not simply a human but bigger; rather God has qualities that individual humans lack. God is qualitatively different than humanity. In that way we are like God in that we are persons. But personhood (the ability to choose, act and reason) is a quality that humans and God have in common but God is more than a person.
Alister McGrath pointed this out in his book I Believe. He states that God is known through analogies not simply by direct observation and control. In this way God is like a father, God is like a mother, and God is like a human. God has some qualities in common with these entities but he is not defined by these things in himself, rather God is only like these analogically. Gods shares some qualities with these entities but is not exhausted by their definitions. In Isaiah 66:12-13 Gods love is compared to a mothers; however, Gods love is deeper, more passionate, more protective, and more nurturing than a mother or a father could ever be and thus we know God loves us deeply but we only know it by analogy.
Imagine that you and a loved one were magically whisked away into a flat paper world to a world that lacked depth. There was length, and width, but depth was simply inconceivable to the residents of this world. Now imagine trying to describe what depth is to a person who has only lived in two dimensions. It would be beyond frustrating trying to describe depth to beings who couldnt comprehend it. You would be forced to use analogies, similes and metaphors to describe what we take for granted as depth. Likewise, God is not merely a being who exists beyond our space and time, our ways of being are infinitely limited compared to Gods ways of being and existing. Thus God can only be really known by metaphor and analogy.
