Research different databases : AFIS -IAFIS (1999) stands for Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System as used by FBI, Which has been upgraded to NGI-Next Generation Identification*, CODIS, NIBIN that are used in different forensic science fields. Give a brief description of the rules that are association with these databases. What is the purpose of each these databases? Describe what is entered into NIBIN and based on its functionality and how the evidence is analyzed, is NIBIN more like AFIS (IAFIS-NGI today) or CODIS? Give reasons for why you think it is more like one than the other.

Introduction

The National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) is a system that allows law enforcement agencies to access criminal history record information from various sources. This can include things like fingerprints and DNA samples, but also includes other forms of identification such as photographs and video footage. NIBIN was created in part due to the need for better ways of sharing data between agencies so that investigators can find relevant information within their own databases without having to share everything with other law enforcement agencies across the country who might have different databases or systems depending on what state they’re working in at any given time.

I would describe NIBIN as a more automated version of the IAFIS system. It also has some features that make it different from AFIS (such as the ability to look up hits in other databases).

NIBIN can look up hits in other databases and use them to find matches on other databases.

For example, NIBIN is able to pull hits off of the NIPRNET database and export them into an evidence file for case review. This allows investigators to see if there are any potential matches for third party or known offenders when there may not be enough evidence to search for on the crime scene side.

NIBIN also has mechanisms that allow investigators to create their own queries so they can narrow down what they want and get exactly what they need within minutes instead of hours like AFIS did before NIBIN was introduced into law enforcement agencies across America back in 2007.

Other things that make it different from CODIS include its ability to merge hits from multiple sources into one evidence file and its ability to cross-reference data between agencies like ICE, CBP, Customs, etc.

NIBIN is a more automated version of the IAFIS system. The data in NIBIN comes from multiple sources, including criminals’ fingerprints and faces scanned by law enforcement agencies. The system can pull hits off of other databases, such as those maintained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), CBP (Customs and Border Protection), or even other state or local agencies. This allows for cross-referencing between agencies so that when one agency finds a match between two different individuals with similar criminal histories, they can use that information to help identify additional suspects or potential links between people involved in criminal activity.
