Faxian and Marco Polo were both travelers. They were from different cultures, times and places–and they wrote about their journeys in very different ways.
Faxian was a Chinese monk who traveled overland between China and India, via the Silk Road (in today’s Afghanistan). Marco Polo was an Italian merchant who traveled on horseback through Central Asia for years before returning home with stories about China that had never been heard before.
Faxian’s narrative is written in classical Chinese; Marco Polo’s work uses vernacular Italian language but has also been translated into English, French, German and other languages throughout Europe during his lifetime.
The Silk Road was a trade route between China and the Mediterranean. It stretched from China through Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan to Europe.
