Unit 5 Checkpoint #1: Turning Point Topic and Explanation
In a Word document, provide a statement explain which turning point you will be researching for your final assessment, including why you believe it to be a significant moment in U.S. history. No sources needed. All work must be your own words. Your instructor will let you know if you need to change or modify your choice. This assignment must be completed in order to move forward.
Your final assessment is an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of U.S. history, and it’s important that you select an important turning point in American history that you can write about in detail. You may want to choose one of the following topics:
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in U.S. history. It led to the Civil War and helped establish our country as an independent nation, but it also established some important rights for all Americans, including women’s suffrage and freedom from slavery (the 13th Amendment).
The Bill of Rights was another major turning point in American history–it guaranteed certain rights for citizens such as freedom from censorship by government officials or religious groups (first amendment).
The 14th Amendment addressed issues related to race relations after the Civil War ended slavery; it also officially granted citizenship rights to former slaves who could not vote before this date due to their lack of residency status within states where they lived before emancipation took place.”
The Civil War was a significant turning point in U.S. history, as it caused the abolition of slavery and ultimately led to the creation of the modern nation-state called the United States. It began with the issue of slavery and expanded into an international conflict between north and south over economic issues, political ideologies, and how best to balance personal freedoms with social welfare programs that helped all citizens prosper materially while respecting their basic human rights as individuals under God’s law.
The election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860 was only part of what led up to this war; he was elected on promises made during his campaign about ending slavery immediately if elected (which did not happen). However, many other factors contributed greatly toward its outbreak: secessionism among southern states; abolitionist movements within those same states; northern agitation against slavery; growing tension between whites/whites versus blacks/blacks over racial equality issues such as voting rights (including literacy test requirements); economic growth vs poverty due partly because farmers depended heavily upon slave labor while urban centers thrived thanks almost entirely upon free labor.”
World War II was a global conflict that began on September 1, 1939 and ended with the surrender of the German Wehrmacht to the Allied Forces on May 7th, 1945. The war involved all of the world’s major powers, including Germany, Italy and Japan. It directly involved many countries not directly involved in Europe such as China and North America (the United States).
The Cold War was a period from 1946 to 1991 where two opposing systems were dominant: communism versus capitalism. This period was characterized by tensions between these two political ideologies which lead to proxy wars between countries fighting for their ideologies’ favor or against them respectively. At its height during this time period there were over 50 countries involved in some type of military conflict related directly or indirectly back then taking place within what’s now referred to as “The Third World War”.
The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but most felt its effects in some way by 1932. In the United States, the stock market crash that started on October 24th 1929 and continued through much of 1930 signaled an end to an era of prosperity for many Americans. Although most economists agree that this crash was not caused by one factor alone (as there were several), it is widely believed that excessive speculation played a role in causing it.
The causes of this economic downturn are still debated today: some argue that changes contributed by new technologies such as radio broadcasting or automobiles had nothing to do with why people lost jobs; others argue these technologies encouraged spending habits which led directly into bank failures due to overproduction resulting from excess demand coupled with low wages due to unemployment rates rising above 20%. Regardless what exactly caused these events, they certainly did lead directly into widespread poverty throughout America at least until FDR came along promising hope again through his New Deal program aimed specifically at helping those most affected by unemployment levels being near 25% overall nationwide since 1933!
The civil rights era was a period of social activism in the United States, beginning after World War II and continuing into the 1970s. This movement was led by African Americans, but it also included white allies who worked together to achieve civil rights for all people regardless of race or ethnicity.
The most famous events of this era include:
To write your final assessment, use the template provided below. It is important that you use this template as your guide and make sure that it is written in first person so that it can be evaluated by your instructor as well as classmates.
As you can see, there are a lot of different events that have impacted our country’s history. The next step is to identify the one event that will most impact your final assessment. In order to do this, think about what would happen if someone did not tell others about the Declaration of Independence or how Abraham Lincoln saved the Union during the Civil War? You may also want to consider other historical events that occurred in relation with each other on a national level as well so you can include them on your list too!
